Dean of Nursing

 

Position Summary:

The Dean of Nursing is responsible for providing leadership in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the nursing program. At the same time, the Dean must facilitate responsiveness by the program to the needs of the community and the healthcare system as well as foster, within the program, an organizational culture that supports collegiality, personal well-being, and professional development of students, faculty, and staff. The Dean also serves as the representative of the program to the College/Campus administration, regulatory and accreditation bodies, Education Affiliates Nursing Division, the local advisory committee, and to other internal and external constituencies.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

I. Professional Behavior

 

1. Demonstrates proper respect for students and has student-friendly manner in the conduct of class.

2. Demonstrates strong organizational leadership and executive presence.

3. Works effectively as part of the overall faculty and administrative teams to include interpersonal relations, collaborating with faculty members to meet student needs, and responding to requests from executive management.

4. Collaborates effectively and positively with the campus leadership team to ensure campus mission is met.

 

II. Organization Stewardship

 

1. Establishes and implements written policies in cooperation with the faculty and meets the standards of the applicable State Board of Nursing and any other accrediting agencies.

2. Submits to the State Board of Nursing and other regulating and accrediting agencies all required reports and self-study documents including reports of program or curriculum changes, in a timely manner in accordance with regulations.

3. Leads change that assures quality and effectiveness of programs and meets the needs of the community. Specific examples are required.

4. Plans, implements, and maintains minutes for regular meetings of the faculty, the advisory board, and the various committees to facilitate communication and to plan, implement, and evaluate curricula, policies, procedures, and programs.

5. Maintains a current file of written agreements with all cooperating agencies and preceptors.

6. Participates in liaison activities with government, civic, labor, and private organizations in the community to promote community understanding and support of nursing education programs.

7. Participates as appropriate on College/Campus committees and taskforces.

8. Participates in the development of an approved budget and manages expenditures within the guidelines of that budget.

9. Establishes and implements policies for admission of students to the program, readmission and advanced standing, progression in the program, and program completion in collaboration with the faculty and College/Campus staff.

10. Maintains faculty files as it relates to accreditation needs.

 

III. Program Development and Management

 

1. Develops, implements, evaluates, and revises curriculum for the nursing program in cooperation with the program faculty and within the standards of the applicable state Board of Nursing and any other accrediting agencies.

2. Establishes and updates as needed, a comprehensive, written systematic plan of evaluation for the nursing programs that includes data collection from faculty, instructional personnel, students, graduates, and employers of graduates.

3. Reviews and recommends requests for materials, equipment and repairs, alterations, or any purchases of labor, materials, supplies, or services for the programs.

4. Provides appropriate certification to the State Board of Nursing for students who complete program requirements and are recommended for NCLEX Exam.

5. Determines the faculty-student ratio for clinical experiences in accordance with the regulations of the applicable state Board of Nursing in collaboration with nursing faculty and clinical agency administrators.

6. Assists in developing marketing communications for the programs and in student recruitment activities.

7. Works with faculty and staff to develop and implement strategies to assist in student retention.

8. Focuses on positive graduate NCLEX success through current and graduate student engagement.

 

IV. Faculty/Student Development and Management

 

1. Recruits and interviews potential faculty and makes recommendations for appointment, promotion, retention, or termination as appropriate.

2. Evaluates faculty in accordance with policies of the College/Campus, EA, and the standards of applicable regulatory bodies.

3. Develops and implements orientation procedures and in-service education for faculty.

4. Counsels students and faculty; problem solves, and facilitates with individuals/groups in the interest of student and program success.

5. Conducts classroom observations to coach and develop faculty members.

 

V. Professional Development Plan

 

1. Attends workshops and relevant continuing education aimed at earning the necessary CEU’s for license requirements and professional growth.

2. Demonstrates professional involvement and leadership through participation in professional organizations, presentations, publications, etc.

3. Completes College/Campus annual Faculty Development Plan.

4. Pursues a DNP or PhD in Nursing degree.

Skills/Competencies/Qualifications:

· Current active unencumbered licensure as a registered nurse or APRN in state of college/campus or multistate privilege to practice nursing in state.

· Graduate of an approved professional nursing education program.

· Baccalaureate degree in nursing and earned Master’s or Doctoral degree in nursing for Associate Degree program and an earned baccalaureate degree in nursing with enrollment and progress toward a Master degree in nursing for Practical Nursing program.

· At least five years practice experience as a Registered Nurse, with at least three years as a faculty member in a professional nursing education program.

· Minimum of one (1) year successful experience in an administrative or management role.

· Competent in personal computer applications: word processing, spreadsheet, database, and email.

· Excellent written, oral communication, and analytical skills.

· Ability to serve as a positive, supportive, and enthusiastic role model.

· Successful completion of criminal background check, drug screening, appropriate immunizations and CPR and HIPAA certification.

 

 

Classification: Exempt

 

Work Hours: Forty per week but may vary daily, and some evening and weekend hours may be required.
