Job Description

Position Overview

Under general supervision, performs advanced duties in support of the Radiation Protection Program to ensure compliance with DOE Orders, OSHA requirements, and site procedures. Responsible for implementing day-to-day radiological monitoring and control activities, generating data and reports, and supporting specialized technical programs such as Dosimetry, Instrumentation, or ISOCS. Provides mentorship and technical guidance to junior technicians, ensuring safe and compliant radiological operations. The specific work assignment may include duties or activities to support the organization in one or more of the following functional areas:

Functional:

  • Implement programmatic elements of Radiation Protection Plan, including air sampling, radiation surveys, contamination monitoring, access control, posting and labeling, and personnel/equipment decontamination.
  • Generate and maintain radiological data records, logs, and reports.
  • Perform instrumentation source checks, calibration, and minor maintenance of survey and sampling equipment.
  • Provide job coverage for radiological work, including participation in job hazard analyses, radiological work permits, and response to accidents or emergencies.
  • Perform quality reviews of survey data, health physics calculations, and monitoring results.
  • Support specialized programs:
      • Dosimetry Program: Issue and track dosimeters, schedule and ship bioassay samples, support dose estimates, and maintain personnel exposure databases.
      • Instrument Program: Operate, calibrate, and maintain radiological instruments, manage inventories, and perform leak testing and quality reviews.
      • ISOCS Program: Operate and calibrate ISOCS systems, perform efficiency calibrations, develop mathematical models, and review analytical data.
  • Mentor and train junior technicians in survey methods, instrument use, contamination control, posting and labeling, and air sampling.
  • Prepare and revise work documents, procedures, and technical reports related to radiological control activities.
  • Utilize spreadsheets, databases, and word processing software to support data reduction, reporting, and communication of results.
Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • 3 years of senior-level experience in applied health physics or equivalent training.
  • Associates or Bachelor degree in a related field may substitute for up to one year of experience.
  • Experience in specialized program areas: minimum one year in dosimetry, instrumentation, or ISOCS if assigned to those programs.
  • National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) certification preferred.
