Douglas County is seeking a candidate with the skills and experience to help our team in providing quality parks and recreation opportunities to enrich the lives of our community members. The Parks Maintenance Specialist plays a vital role in caring for our parks, athletic fields, and recreational facilities, ensuring clean and safe public spaces are available for the enjoyment of all. The ideal candidate enjoys hands-on, outdoor work, works well as part of a team, and takes pride in providing quality service and community stewardship.

Primary Objectives

Performs intermediate work performing skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the care and maintenance of parks, playing fields, campsites and other landscaped and recreation areas; performing weed control activities; performing related tasks as apparent or assigned.


This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Uses County vehicle and specialized equipment to perform various tasks related to job duties.
  2. Mows, trims, edges, fertilizes, and waters parks, playing fields and other landscaped areas; weeds, prunes, mulches, fertilizes, and sprays trees, plants and shrubbery; prepares soil for planting; seeds and re-sods lawn areas; plants trees, seedlings and shrubs; applies pesticides and fertilizers.
  3. Installs, repairs and maintains irrigation systems; adjusts, repairs and replaces timing mechanisms. Inspects assigned areas; corrects or reports safety hazards; cleans and maintains park grounds, restrooms, athletic fields, campsites, paved areas and paths; grooms and prepares ball fields and other park facilities. 
  4. Maintains buildings and facilities; empties trash and performs litter control; cleans restrooms, horse stalls, fire pits, storage rooms and shops.
  5. Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power landscaping tools and equipment, including hand and riding mowers, tractors, spreaders, edgers, blowers, trimmers, chainsaws, rakes, shovels, hoes, brooms and other tools; operates trucks, trailers and tractors with attachments. 
  6. Cleans lighting fixtures and replaces bulbs/tubes. 
  7. Empties, cleans and lines waste receptacles and disposes of trash. 
  8. Performs basic building repair work; may paint facilities and perform graffiti removal; maintains drinking fountains.
  9. Performs snow removal tasks; plowing, shoveling, applying ice melt.
  10. Maintains vehicles, equipment, materials and supplies in proper condition. 
  11. Observes safe working practices, including maintaining storage areas in a safe condition. 
  12. Responds to questions and complaints from the public; collects fees; informs public on rules and regulations or guides them to appropriate resources. 
  13. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team. 
  14. Completes basic records of work performed and materials used. 
  15. Performs set-ups and tear-downs for special events.
  16. Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public. 
  17. Contributes effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Position requires a High School diploma or GED and two (2) year of experience in horticultural or landscape maintenance; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
  • Valid Driver's License Required
  • Nevada Restricted Use Pesticide certification within one (1) year of date of employment.
  • CPR and First Aid certification within six (6) months of date of employment.
  • OSHA 10 Certification within one (1) year of date of employment.
  • Forklift Operator Certification within one (1) year of date of employment.

  • This work requires the regular exertion of over 100 pounds of force.
  • Work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions; frequently requires sitting, climbing or balancing, kneeling or crawling and reaching with hands and arms; occasionally requires tasting or smelling.
  • Work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machinery, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jackhammers, recycling plant).
  • Work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration; frequently requires working in high/precarious places and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals; occasionally requires exposure to wet/humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens (may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment).
