1. Purpose

This policy defines the responsibilities, expectations, and performance standards for Field Mechanics. The goal is to ensure safe, timely, and high‑quality maintenance and repair of equipment in the field to support production and minimize downtime.

2. Role Overview

Field Mechanics are responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy equipment and trucks directly on project sites. They support production by keeping machines running safely and efficiently, reducing downtime, and coordinating closely with the Equipment Manager and field leadership.

Field Mechanics report to the Equipment Manager, with daily coordination from Superintendents and Foremen.

3. Core Responsibilities & Performance Standards

A. Equipment Diagnosis & Repair

Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and fuel system issues.

Perform field repairs on dozers, excavators, haul trucks, skid steers, compactors, and support equipment.
Use proper tools, diagnostic equipment, and repair procedures.
Prioritize repairs based on production needs and safety.

Performance Standards

Repairs completed safely and efficiently.
Accurate diagnosis with minimal repeat issues.
Downtime reduced through timely response.

B. Preventive Maintenance (PM)

Perform scheduled PM services in the field (oil changes, filters, lubrication, inspections).
Document PM completion and report upcoming service needs.
Identify wear items before failure occurs.
Coordinate PM scheduling with the Equipment Manager and field leadership.

Performance Standards

PM completed on schedule with full documentation.
Reduced breakdowns due to proactive maintenance.
Equipment maintained in optimal operating condition.

C. Safety & Compliance

Follow all company safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and equipment safety standards.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe service truck.
Use proper PPE and ensure safe work zones during repairs.
Report unsafe conditions or equipment immediately.

Performance Standards

Zero preventable safety violations.
Safe repair zones established consistently.
Service truck stocked, organized, and compliant.

D. Field Support & Coordination

Communicate repair timelines and equipment status to Superintendents and Foremen.
Coordinate with operators to understand equipment issues.
Support field operations by prioritizing repairs that impact production.
Assist with equipment mobilization, setup, and troubleshooting.

Performance Standards

Clear, timely communication with field leadership.
Repairs aligned with production priorities.
Strong working relationships with operators and crews.

E. Documentation & Reporting

Complete repair logs, service reports, and equipment condition forms.
Track parts usage, labor hours, and repair notes.
Report recurring issues or equipment abuse to the Equipment Manager.
Maintain accurate records for warranty and cost tracking.

Performance Standards

Documentation accurate, complete, and submitted daily.
Repair history maintained for each unit.
Issues escalated early with clear information.

F. Parts, Tools & Inventory Management

Maintain proper inventory of common parts, filters, fluids, and tools on the service truck.
Request parts in advance to minimize downtime.
Ensure tools are maintained, calibrated, and in safe working condition.
Prevent waste, loss, or misuse of company materials.

Performance Standards

Service truck stocked and ready at all times.
Minimal delays due to missing parts or tools.
Tools maintained in excellent condition.

G. Professionalism & Representation

Represent the company professionally with vendors, operators, and field teams.
Maintain a positive attitude and strong work ethic.
Provide guidance to operators on proper machine care.
Support a culture of equipment respect and accountability.

Performance Standards

Positive feedback from field leadership.
Operators demonstrate improved equipment care.
Professional conduct at all times.

Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.
Minimum of 3 years of experience repairing and maintaining heavy equipment, diesel engines, or construction equipment.
Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, fuel systems, powertrains, and undercarriage components.
Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot equipment issues using diagnostic software, testing equipment, and technical manuals.
Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Ability to work independently in field environments with minimal supervision.
Ability to safely operate service trucks, forklifts, and other support equipment as required.
Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
Ability to read and understand service manuals, schematics, and repair procedures.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and perform physically demanding work in various weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
Technical school training or certification in diesel technology, heavy equipment repair, or a related field.
Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Manufacturer training or certifications from Caterpillar, John Deere, Komatsu, Volvo, Hitachi, Case, or similar equipment manufacturers.
ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications in medium/heavy truck or diesel equipment repair.
Welding and fabrication experience.
Experience with GPS, telematics, and equipment monitoring systems.
Experience working in earthmoving, mining, aggregates, utility construction, or heavy civil construction environments.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Advanced troubleshooting skills for mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
Ability to prioritize multiple repairs in a fast-paced production environment.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
Knowledge of OSHA regulations, lockout/tagout procedures, and equipment safety practices.
Ability to maintain accurate repair records, work orders, and maintenance documentation.
Strong organizational skills for managing parts inventory, tools, and service truck operations.
Commitment to professionalism, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, dust, and mud.
Ability to climb, kneel, stoop, crawl, and work in confined spaces around heavy equipment.
Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime and emergency breakdown response as business needs require.
Ability to safely perform work while exposed to noise, vibration, oils, fuels, and other shop or field-related conditions.
Must be able to pass any required pre-employment drug screening, background checks, and fit-for-duty evaluations.

Salary : $46,000 - $70,000
