Job Title: American Indian Education Coordinator - .75 FTE

Bargaining Unit: At-Will Employee

Reports To: Superintendent or Designee

 

Position Summary

The American Indian Education Coordinator provides leadership, advocacy, and coordination for the district’s American Indian Education Program in accordance with Minnesota statutes, district priorities, and the educational needs of American Indian students and families. The Coordinator works collaboratively with students, families, staff, tribal communities, and community organizations to promote academic achievement, cultural identity, engagement, and equitable educational opportunities for American Indian students across the district. The Coordinator serves as a liaison between the school district, American Indian families, tribal nations, and community partners while supporting culturally responsive practices and programming districtwide.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program Leadership and Coordination

  • Coordinate and oversee all aspects of the district’s American Indian Education Program.
  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal requirements related to American Indian Education programming and funding.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate programming designed to improve academic

achievement, attendance, graduation rates, and student engagement for American Indian students.

  • Coordinate the district’s American Indian Advisory Committee (AIAC) in accordance with Minnesota law.
  • Prepare and submit required reports, budgets, applications, and program evaluations related to American Indian Education funding and programming.
  • Collaborate with district and building leadership teams to ensure equitable opportunities and culturally responsive practices are embedded throughout the district.

Student Support and Advocacy

  • Build positive relationships with American Indian students and families.
  • Monitor student academic progress, attendance, engagement, and graduation pathways.
  • Advocate for student needs and help connect students and families with academic, social-emotional, culture, and community resources.
  • Support student transitions between grade levels and post-secondary planning opportunities.
  • Assist students and families in navigating school systems and accessing available supports.

 

Cultural Leadership and Community Engagement

  • Promote understanding, appreciation, and inclusion of American Indian cultures, histories, perspectives, and contributions throughout the district.
  • Support culturally responsive instructional practices and curriculum integration.
  • Serve as liaison between the district and tribal communities, organizations, and agencies.
  • Coordinate cultural events, activities, and learning opportunities for students and staff.
  • Develop partnerships with local tribal governments, colleges, organizations, and community groups to enhance opportunities for students.

Staff Collaboration and Professional Development

  • Provide support, resources, and guidance to staff regarding culturally responsive educational practices and strategies to support American Indian students.
  • Collaborate with teachers, counselors, administrators, and student support teams to address barriers to student success.
  • Assist in planning and delivering professional development related to equity, inclusion, cultural responsiveness, and American Indian Education.

Data, Compliance, and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate student and program records.
  • Utilize data to identify trends, evaluate program effectiveness, and support continuous improvement efforts.
  • Assist the district in maintaining compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and reporting requirements related to American Indian Education programming and funding.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Work, Counseling, Human Services, or related field preferred.
  • Minnesota teaching license, counseling license, or administrative licensure preferred.
  • Experience in PK-12 education.
  • Experience working with American Indian students, families, and communities.
  • Knowledge of American Indian cultures, traditions, histories, and educational issues.
  • Experience coordinating programs, grants, or student support services.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in equity and culturally responsive practices.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, staff, and community partners.

Working Conditions

  • School and office environment with regular interaction with students, staff, families, and community organizations.
  • Occasional evening meetings and events are required.
  • Travel within the district and region may be necessary.
