Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1* year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.

Proof of active bar membership in good standing is required.

United States citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have experience with the False Claims Act, excellent research and writing skills, the ability to learn new substantive areas of law quickly, and the ability to assume responsibility for his or her own cases. Our team of six civil attorneys takes pride in the quality of our work and enjoys a collegial and collaborative environment.

Applicants must also have litigation experience, superior oral communication skills, and a demonstrated capacity to function in a highly demanding environment with minimal guidance.

Responsibilities:

Overview of the United States Attorney's Office - District of Vermont
The United States Attorney's Office, District of Vermont, is located in Burlington, Vermont. The office has approximately 20 Assistant United States Attorneys and 24 support staff, which support both the criminal and civil divisions. Our office has a friendly and talented staff, an outstanding relationship with the courts, and enjoys excellent professional working relationships with partner agencies.

Duties of Civil Assistant United States Attorneys
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Vermont is seeking one highly qualified candidate to serve as an AUSA in the Civil Division. Civil Division AUSAs are responsible for representing the federal government and its agencies and employees in civil litigation in the District. This position will be dedicated primarily to handling affirmative civil enforcement matters such as violations of the False Claims Act, health care fraud, procurement fraud, Controlled Substances Act violations, and qui tam whistleblower cases. Our tightknit division also shares responsibility for a diverse defensive docket, including immigration matters, torts, bankruptcy, environmental matters, employment discrimination, commercial litigation, and challenges to agency actions, among others.

Civil Division AUSAs handle their matters with high levels of independence in investigations and at the trial and appellate levels. Responsibilities include gathering evidence, taking depositions, preparing and answering interrogatories and other discovery requests, negotiating settlements, engaging in motion practice, trying cases, and writing and arguing appeals. Responsibilities and cases are assigned commensurate with experience and will increase in complexity as the AUSA progresses in training and experience.

Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.
