What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tax Manager position at Distinct | North America?
One of the strange things about public accounting is that firms often celebrate growth as though it's automatically a good thing.
More clients. More revenue. More people.
Until everyone is working every evening wondering what all that growth was actually for.
This firm took a different approach.
There have been times they've deliberately turned work away because protecting the people they already have mattered more than squeezing a little more revenue into the year. It's a surprisingly simple idea, but one that's surprisingly rare.
They're an independent CPA firm of around 50 professionals, hiring across Tax from Associate through to Senior Manager level.
The work is broad enough that no two weeks look the same. You'll work with entrepreneurial businesses, partnerships, corporations, nonprofits, manufacturers, construction companies and high net worth individuals. Most of the team are generalists, although if you've developed a specialist area over the years, they're happy to make use of it.
Why people tend to stay
- Busy season is typically around 50 to 60 hours, not endless months of late nights.
- Hybrid working and flexibility outside of busy season, because life doesn't conveniently happen after April.
- Leadership trusts people to manage their workload without someone constantly checking who's online.
- Clear progression, with Partners who actively invest time in developing future leaders.
- Mentoring and CPE support that actually helps you move your career forward.
- Plenty of autonomy as your experience grows, without feeling like you're being left to figure everything out alone.
- A genuinely approachable leadership team that still knows the people behind the job titles.
- A firm that's grown steadily by looking after both its clients and its employees, instead of sacrificing one for the other.
For Manager level, a CPA is required. If you're earlier in your career and working towards it, they're happy to support that journey.
If you're looking for another Tax job, there are plenty.
If you're looking for a firm that understands accountants produce better work when they're treated like adults, that's a much shorter list.
If you are just browsing the job boards and have not dusted off that resume yet, that is not a problem, you can give me a call first. You will find my number on LinkedIn. 312-564-5028.
If you have reviewed this advert and you are unsure whether to apply because you do not have all the required experience, we still encourage you to hit that apply button. We support the CPA firms we partner with in building diverse, inclusive and equitable workplaces, so even if your experience does not align perfectly, please do still apply. If this position is not quite right, it is highly likely we will have other public accounting positions that could be a good fit for you.
