Position Summary
A Third Grade Teacher at St. John's Catholic classical school is responsible for forming students intellectually, spiritually, morally, and socially within the tradition of Catholic education and classical learning. The teacher fosters a joyful, disciplined classroom rooted in truth, goodness, and beauty while delivering rigorous instruction in core academic subjects integrated with the Catholic faith.
Primary Responsibilities
Catholic Formation
- Model and uphold the teachings and values of the Catholic Church in word and conduct.
- Support the spiritual development of students through prayer, virtue formation, and participation in liturgical life.
- Integrate Catholic worldview and classical principles across all subject areas.
- Encourage habits of respect, responsibility, charity, and self-discipline.
Instruction & Curriculum
- Teach core elementary subjects including:
- Reading and literature
- Writing and grammar
- Mathematics
- History and geography
- Science
- Religion
- Use classical education methods such as narration, memorization, recitation, copywork, Socratic discussion, and rich literature.
- Foster critical thinking, wonder, attentiveness, and eloquent communication.
- Differentiate instruction to meet varying student needs while maintaining high academic standards.
- Assess student progress regularly and maintain accurate academic records.
Classroom Management
- Maintain an orderly, joyful, and structured classroom environment.
- Establish routines that promote attentiveness, reverence, and personal responsibility.
- Address student behavior with charity, consistency, and clear expectations.
Communication & Collaboration
- Maintain positive and professional communication with parents regarding student progress and classroom expectations.
- Collaborate with faculty, administration, and parish staff to support the mission of the school.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, school events, and parent conferences.
Professional Expectations
- Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and commitment to the mission of Catholic classical education.
- Continue personal growth in Catholic faith formation and classical pedagogy.
- Comply with all diocesan policies, safe environment requirements, and Indiana educational standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field required.
- Valid Indiana teaching license or ability to obtain licensure preferred.
- Practicing Catholic in good standing preferred (or willingness to support and uphold Catholic teaching).
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn classical education philosophy and methods.
- Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills.
- Experience teaching elementary students preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to supervise and engage actively with elementary-aged students throughout the school day.
- Ability to lift classroom materials and stand for extended periods.
