School Nurse (Non-Exempt/Hourly)

Part-Time Position: A part-time, hourly position for 21 hours per week during the school year. The weekly schedule is Monday, Wednesday & Friday 7:45am – 2:45pm.  Outside of the school year you are scheduled as needed for administrative paperwork and on Verification Day. This position is not eligible for benefits.        

 

Reports To: Principal, Assistant Principal

 

Summary: Our School Nurse cares for our preschool – 8th grade students.  We are seeking a caring, compassionate, experienced professional who loves taking care of children and prioritizes communication and engagement.  This position requires administrative work as well as one-on-one time with students.  We are looking for an individual who truly cares about making our school a better place for our students.  This includes educating students about healthy habits as well as responding to any medical complaints at school and performing routine screenings.  We currently serve approximately 600 students during the school year.  

                       

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

·         Prepare the school clinic area for use, assuring safety, cleanliness and adequate stocking of supplies.

 

·         Assist health professionals to perform and document required vision and hearing screenings.  Notify parents when further evaluation is indicated.

 

·         Maintain a clinic log of clinic visits by students with appropriate descriptive information.

 

·         Assess students and implement first aid measures for students as needed.  Contact parent/guardian as needed.

 

·         Serve as a health liaison (student advocate) between home and school. 

 

·         Provide referral and follow-up of identified health problems when appropriate and reports communicable diseases to appropriate agencies.

 

·         Provide nursing assessment and/or follow up of students identified with existing or potential health problems or conditions affecting school performance (for example: post-concussion protocol, need for water at desk, frequent bathroom breaks, extra snacks etc.).

 

·         Administer daily and PRN (as needed) medications and nursing care procedures prescribed by the student’s physician.  Documenting according to established guidelines.

 

·         Establish, review and update student health records and immunizations.  Contacting parents/guardians, as needed, for compliance of all health records and immunizations, recommended by the Indiana State Department of Health.

 

·         Document immunizations in Children and Hoosiers Immunization Registry Program (CHIRP).

 

·         Assures that students with diabetes, seizures, food allergies, and asthma have appropriate care plans, completed each year and signed by parents and doctors. Assures necessary emergency medications are available at school and provides appropriate training for anyone who might administer the medications. (Ex: teachers on field trips)

 

·         Communicate with parents/guardians’ information on pertinent health care topics.  Ex: changes in immunizations requirements, newsletter

 

·         Inform teacher and pertinent staff of students who have a specific acute and/or chronic health care issue.  Provide training to staff if these students should require assistance when school nurse is unavailable.

 

·         Works with cafeteria staff, assuring they are aware of students with food allergies and promote student safety during mealtimes.

 

·         Provide pediculosis (lice) screenings, as requested by parents and/or teachers for an individual student.

 

·         Initiate emergency procedures for students and staff as needed. Assures emergency supply kit is stocked and available.

 

·         Establish safe clinic procedures.

 

·         Provide OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen and other health and safety related training for all staff. 

 

·         Establish, review and update staff health records, maintaining compliance with Blood Borne Pathogen training and CPR training.

 

·         Provide CPR/AED training for staff, if current in CPR instructor status.  Or coordinate CPR/AED training with an outside facility.

 

·         Serves as a resource person to school personnel. Provides health related educational programs for students, as requested by staff. (CPR for 7th grade, hand washing, etc.)

 

·         Prepare and submit an end of year health report each school year to the Department of Education by June 15th.  Maintains all appropriate records.

 

·         Assures training of delegated tasks to unlicensed administrative personnel when nurse is not available.  Assure that unlicensed administrative personnel have attended medication class, feel comfortable with, and have checked off with school RN on performing these delegated tasks.

 

·         Serves on school committees as required or appropriate. Wellness Committee, Safety Committee

 

·         Help to develop/revise school health policies and procedures.

 

·         Available on school Verification Day to collect health related forms and answer questions for parents.

 

·         Attend quarterly Allen County Non-Public School Association nurses meeting. 

 

·         Maintain confidentiality regarding school matters.  Follows the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act relating to student’s education records. Models and maintains high ethical standards.

 

·         Participate in training programs offered to increase skill and knowledge related to job requirements.

 

·         Keep administrative staff informed of potential problems or unusual events.  Complete or assist in the completion of incident reports.

 

·         Responds to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner. 

 

·         Complies with procedures and protocols set forth by Indiana Department of Education and Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.

·         Current CPR certification preferred

·         Registered Nurse and possess a current license to practice professional nursing in Indiana
