Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated RF Engineering Intern to support the Wireless Design Services HW/RF team throughout the summer. The intern will work closely with senior RF engineers to design circuits, validate and test hardware, assist with simulation and antenna design projects, and contribute to internal tool development and automation initiatives. This role offers hands‑on exposure to LTE, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and LoRa radio technologies, along with practical experience in RF/HW product development.
Location: Hopkins, MN
Key Responsibilities
- Support RF and hardware design activities, including component selection, schematic entry, and design documentation.
- Assist in design verification testing (DVT) for new hardware designs.
- Contribute to root-cause analysis, troubleshooting, and corrective‑action efforts for RF and HW issues.
- Gain exposure to soldering techniques and use of standard engineering test equipment (oscilloscopes, DMMs, spectrum analyzers, VNAs, etc.).
- Develop or enhance automation tools (Python, Excel, Power BI) to streamline data processing, modeling workflows, or engineering reporting.
- Participate in antenna characterization tasks such as tuning, matching, and test data collection.
- Document engineering work products, test methods, analysis processes, and project outcomes.
- Present end-of-internship findings to engineering leadership.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Understanding of fundamental RF principles, including:
- Smith Chart interpretation
- Antenna design basics
- Filters, matching networks, and impedance concepts
- Basic understanding of LTE, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and LoRa radio technologies.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills.
- Familiarity with data analysis tools such as Excel, Python, or MATLAB.
- Clear communication skills and a willingness to learn in a fast‑paced environment.
Preferred Skills
- Coursework or hands‑on experience in RF Engineering, wireless communication systems, circuit design, or antenna theory.
- Experience writing Python scripts for data manipulation, automation, or engineering workflows.
- Exposure to CAD tools (Altium, ADS, HFSS, CST, etc.) is a plus.
- Exposure to antenna simulation tools (HFSS) is a plus
Expected Outcomes by End of Internship
By the conclusion of the internship, the candidate will:
- Gain hands‑on experience with HW/RF product design and testing, including:
- Schematic design and review in Altium Designer
- Laboratory testing and measurement of RF/HW prototypes
- Antenna tuning, matching, and performance characterization
- Produce clear, reusable technical documentation, including test reports, design notes, or tool user guides.
- Develop and deliver a final presentation summarizing project work, test results, tools developed, and overall impact.
- Demonstrate measurable growth in RF engineering fundamentals, laboratory skills, data analysis, and professional communication.
