About DeVine Woodworking
DeVine Woodworking is a NYC-based custom design-build woodworking studio specializing in bespoke built-ins, cabinetry, and furniture. We focus on thoughtful design, high-quality craftsmanship, and creating hand made pieces that feel both functional and artful.
We’re growing steadily and looking for a part-time woodworking apprentice who wants to refine their craft, contribute meaningfully to projects, and grow with the business long-term.
This is an apprenticeship-style role, not a general labor or construction position.
The Role
You’ll work closely with Travis DeVine, Owner and Lead Woodworker, on multiple projects at a time, assisting through every phase of the build process: from raw materials to finished installation. The day-to-day work varies, but the workflow remains consistent, allowing you to build real skills and confidence over time.
As trust and competence grow, this role offers increased autonomy and responsibility.
What You’ll Be Doing
Shop & Build Support
- Sanding wood panels and finished parts (hand sanding, palm sanders)
- Edge banding and finish prep
- Priming, painting, and staining (roller and spray prep)
- Assisting with milling processes (routing, planing, channel cutting)
- Reading shop drawings and schematics
- Reviewing and executing cut lists
- Cutting sheet goods with a track saw
- Assembly support (hinges, drilling, hardware, basic electrical assistance when applicable)
Shop Operations
- Loading/unloading plywood and materials
- Organizing materials in the sheet rack
- Maintaining a clean, safe work area throughout the day
- Sweeping and cleaning the shop daily
- Breaking down cardboard and organizing trash
- Monthly dump runs (driving company vehicle)
- Sharpening chisels and tools (whet stone, grinder)
- Loading and unloading finished projects into transportation vehicle
Required Skills & Qualities
- Interest in craft, design, and woodworking as an art form
- Basic familiarity with woodworking tools (formal training not required), such as:
Palm sanders
Drills and drivers
Chisels
Chop saw
Table saw
Biscuit joiner
- Artistic eye and attention to detail
- Organized, diligent, and reliable
- Comfortable taking direction and working through a weekly task list
- Able to adapt to changing priorities day-to-day
- Ability to lift 50lbs comfortably
- Physically fit and able to work in a hands-on shop environment
- Valid driver’s license (required)
Schedule & Day Structure
- Hours: 9:30am–5:30pm
- Days: 2–3 days per week (minimum 2 days required)
- Breaks:
1-hour lunch (unpaid)
Two paid 15-minute breaks
- Overtime: Paid at 1.5x hourly rate when required during project crunch times
Work can be physically demanding at times. We provide a comfortable rest/office area, water bottles, and snacks.
Pay & Job Structure
- $20–25/hour, depending on experience
