Job Summary
Front Counter Sales is responsible for providing best-in-class service to walk-in customers and visitors to the nursery. This role serves as the primary point of contact at the sales counter and supports customers with placing orders, picking up will-call orders, and navigating the nursery.
Successful Front Counter Sales employees use strong customer service skills, plant knowledge, and attention to detail to assist customers, answer questions, and ensure a positive customer experience. This role works closely with the Sales team, Yard staff, and other departments to support efficient order processing and customer service.
Essential Functions
- Greet customers at the sales counter in a friendly and professional manner.
- Welcome new customers and introduce them to the nursery and company services.
- Process walk-in sales transactions using the company’s Point of Sale and inventory systems.
- Answer incoming customer phone calls and assist with questions or order inquiries.
- Assist customers with checking in and checking out for will-call orders placed in advance.
- Provide plant location information and assist customers in navigating the nursery.
- Instruct customers on proper procedures for hand-selecting plants and tagging plant material in the yard.
- Communicate with yard staff to facilitate order pulling, customer assistance, and plant availability.
- Answer questions regarding plant availability, specifications, and product information.
- Demonstrate knowledge of nursery inventory, product performance, and product offerings.
- Assist the sales team with preparing estimates and supporting customer inquiries when needed.
- Determine wholesale versus non-wholesale customers according to company guidelines.
Additional Responsibilities
- Assist with company initiatives including physical inventories, sales meetings, and marketing activities.
- Support company participation in industry trade events when needed.
- Interact professionally with office staff, field staff, and customers.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support overall business operations.
Experience & Other Requirements
Required
- Sales or customer service experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers and coworkers.

- Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office and business software systems.
Preferred
- Experience working in a nursery, landscape, or related industry.
- Knowledge of plants and nursery products.
- Experience using point-of-sale systems or inventory management software.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This is an in-office position based at the nursery sales counter. Remote work is not available for this role.
Work conditions include both office-based work and regular interaction within nursery yard areas where outdoor weather conditions and uneven ground surfaces may be present.
Physical requirements include:
- Sitting or standing for extended periods while assisting customers and working at the sales counter.
- Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, 10-key entry, and computer work.
- Occasional walking through nursery yard areas to assist customers.
- Lifting up to 20 lbs. approximately 20% of the time.
