Salary: $26.67 - $29.29/hr

Reports to: Program Supervisor, Office of Student Transportation

Position Summary

As a member of the DPSCD’s Office of Student Transportation (OST), the Assistant Transportation Supervisor (ATS) will work with transportation service providers to manage the transportation operations of five terminals servicing DPSCD. The ATS will manage the assignments of bus attendants and van drivers to ensure that the District can fulfill its commitment to its students, families, staff and community partners. This position will provide customer service support and assist in the resolution of transportation concerns with stakeholders. The ATS will be specifically responsible for resolving transportation concerns, managing routes, managing employees, ensuring deadlines are met, and administering corrective discipline to employees in violation of the District’s work rules or associated Collective Bargaining Agreements. This position will supervise District bus attendants and van drivers and also be tasked with managing and providing support on other transportation projects that will advance the District’s priorities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or combination of high school diploma or GED and equivalent experience.
  • Must possess a valid Michigan Chauffeur’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
  • Ability to work a split-shift – early morning and afternoon.

Experience

  • Three (3) years of experience in transportation-related industry or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in an urban school district transportation environment preferred.
  • Effective problem-solving skills – ability to effectively communicate and solve problems in a timely manner.
  • Appropriate working knowledge of MS Office Software as applicable (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • High expectations – a clear commitment to setting and upholding high standards for students and the adults who serve them.
  • High customer service skills – strong customer service skills in conveying critical information to parents, vendors and schools.

Essential Functions

  • Provide District leadership at transportation locations by directing student transportation services and managing District employees.
  • Provide training, coaching and assistance to bus attendants on an ongoing basis.
  • Oversee bus attendant personnel and communicate route and vehicle changes.
  • Perform bus attendant check in, collect payroll forms and submit to appropriate OST team member.
  • Coordinate and communicate route changes with parents, vendors and school administrators.
  • Set performance expectations, coach and counsel all direct reports in an effort to meet operational expectations.
  • Monitor staff training requirements and ensure all employees obtain the required skills and abilities to perform their job assignments.
  • Ensure overall compliance with District policies and procedures.
  • Discipline employees for violations of work rules and District policies, and report and refer serious violations to Program Supervisor.
  • Investigate customer complaints, prepare reports regarding findings, and work with management, staff and vendors to resolve issues.
  • Provide transportation information to schools, parents and community under the direction of the Program Supervisor and/or Executive Director of OST.
  • Respond to customer communications via email and telephone in an efficient and professional manner.
  • Manage bus attendant hours and monitor scheduled hours versus actual hours worked to ensure compliance with District objectives.
  • Effectively and frequently communicate with transportation staff and support team members.
  • Collaborate with other teams to ensure coordination and timely completion of projects/tasks, assist with special projects, and resolve escalated incidents or service requests.
  • Coordinate assistance with the District’s Public Safety Department regarding emergency situations involving student transportation.¿This includes missing students, vehicle accidents and undesirable incidents that occur during transport.
  • Communicate vehicle accidents to supervisors, school administrators and parents.
  • Seek out and embrace opportunities to ensure customer service skills are up to date, aligned to industry standards and the needs of the District; proactively share knowledge with colleagues to improve the performance of the team.¿
  • Perform duties in alignment with established policies and procedures, as well as serve as an agent to inform others of new policies, procedures and change management.
  • Manage and oversee the installation of safety equipment including harnesses, harness anchors, wheelchair straps and car seats.
  • May require operation of District vehicles in absence of van drivers to transport students to and from school or during training of van driver candidates.
  • Assist in the hiring of bus attendant personnel.
  • Perform other duties as required by supervisor.
