Position Summary
The Principal is responsible for ensuring rigorous and standards-aligned teaching and learning while establishing and maintaining a positive culture for students, staff and families. He or she provides visionary leadership while ensuring a rigorous education for all students and ensure that students reach academic goals and feel supported socially and emotionally. The Principal manages all aspects of the school-level budgeting process, as well as efforts to drive school improvement and oversees daily school operations. The Principal ensures there is collaborative, two-way communication between families and staff and seeks out feedback from the community on ways to improve the school community. The Principal supervises and evaluates school personnel and provides regular feedback and professional learning opportunities to drive improvement.

Minimum Qualifications
- Must possess and provide evidence of a Master’s Degree inclusive of 20 semester hours in School Administration, Supervision, Curriculum, and School Finance. In the absence of the School Finance course work, candidates must show demonstrated experience developing and managing staff and operating budgets
- Must possess a valid Michigan Teacher Certificate for Exceptional Student Education (also known as Special Education).
- Must possess and provide evidence of State of Michigan Administrator Certification
- Must possess or be eligible for a temporary approval as a Special Education Supervisor required by R340.1751 of the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education. Candidates must provide (a) a letter from the Michigan Department of Education indicating that they hold at least temporary approval OR (b) a recommendation from an approved college/university indicating that educational requirements for at least temporary approval have been met.
- A minimum of five (5) years certified contract-teaching experience with a demonstrated effectiveness.
- Possess in-depth knowledge of adult and child learning theory.
- Must possess in-depth knowledge of curriculum and instruction and Exceptional Student Education laws and regulations.
- Prior experience leading in a day treatment or similar program strongly preferred
- Provide direct support and staff development opportunities for teachers, teacher consultants and paraprofessionals on best practices and scientific research-based practices that can improve the learning outcomes for students identified as Emotionally Impaired.
- Ensure that special service education programs and services are provided to students in accordance with all applicable federal/state/county requirements and district policies, goals and procedures.
- Provide leadership in the development and implementation of instructional programs that meet the diverse needs of students that are eligible as emotionally impaired.
- Assist with the recruitment, hiring, monitoring and evaluation of instructional and support staff.
- Assist with the development of Individual Development Plans to improve the performance of new and marginal teachers.
- Maintain appropriate student and program data to develop, present and manage Act 18 budgets for the Emotionally Impaired Programs.
- Assist with staff training and administration of appropriate student district/state assessments using allowable accommodations.
- Supervise and coordinate the purchase of assistive technology, and other adaptive materials to support the learning of students who are emotionally impaired.
- Lead the selection, implementation and evaluation of supplemental textbooks, supplies and instructional aids for the emotionally impaired programs.
- Provide assistance with the investigation, resolution and implementation of corrective actions related to complaints and compliance monitoring.
- Develop and deliver parents and community trainings, forums and institutes that promote cooperative and supportive working relationships to improve the educational outcomes of students who are emotionally impaired.
- Lead staff in the development and evaluation of programs designed to support the acquisition of adult role responsibilities (transition services).
- Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
