The California Department of Insurance (CDI) is seeking a dynamic Student Assistant who is eager to support the rate filing staff to fulfill their mission, to ensure the insurance companies comply with California Insurance Code which requires the rates may not be excessive, inadequate, or unfairly discriminatory.

Under the close supervision of the Bureau Chief and Senior Insurance Rate Analyst, the Student Assistant, will learn policies, procedures and techniques related to how the Rate Regulation Branch reviews and analyzes rate filings of lesser complexity containing rates, rating plans, rating systems, manual rules and policy forms for property casualty lines of business. The incumbent will learn about the process of determining completeness and accuracy of data, impact on rates, appropriateness of forms, and compliance with California Insurance Code and California Code of Regulations. The incumbent will learn about and perform tasks related to the completion of analyst recommendations, rating templates, and related analytical spreadsheets.

Student Assistant is a classification designed for undergraduate college students performing pre-professional duties. Student Assistants must a maintain continued enrollment in a college curriculum totaling a minimum of six (6) semester units or nine (9) quarter units, and must also maintain a 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA).

Working Conditions

  • Eligible for telework in accordance with CDIs telework policy. Teleworking student assistant may be required to report to their headquarters office location as needed. Travel expenses are not reimbursed, however other authorized transit subsidies do exist for those who qualify.
  • Must be able to work in a high-rise building.
  • Position may require frequent sitting.
