Position Summary
The PACS Administrator is responsible for the management, maintenance, and optimization of the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) under the direction of the Director of Information Systems. This role ensures the reliable storage, retrieval, and distribution of medical images across the healthcare organization.
The PACS Administrator collaborates closely with radiologists, clinicians, and IT teams to provide technical support, troubleshoot system issues, implement upgrades, and maintain compliance with healthcare regulations. This position plays a critical role in ensuring system integrity, data security, and seamless integration between PACS and other hospital systems such as HIS and EMR.
Key Responsibilities
PACS System Management
- Manage daily operations of the PACS, ensuring accurate storage, retrieval, and transmission of medical images
- Monitor system performance and perform routine maintenance to ensure optimal functionality
- Review and analyze daily PACS system logs and respond to alerts, errors, and warnings
- Oversee maintenance and replacement of PACS hardware, including servers, storage, and workstations
- Perform daily PACS maintenance activities as required
User Access and Security
- Create and manage login access for radiologists, radiology staff, and hospital physicians
- Establish and maintain role-based access controls
- Respond promptly to urgent login or password issues
- Develop, enforce, and monitor policies related to system security, monitoring, and HIPAA compliance
- Monitor PACS usage and report any misuse to the Director of Information Systems
Technical Support and Troubleshooting
- Provide technical support and training to radiologists, physicians, and clinical staff
- Troubleshoot and resolve PACS-related hardware, software, and network issues
- Respond to emergent PACS outages or access issues
- Coordinate with vendors for advanced technical support
- Document system issues, resolutions, and configuration changes
System Integration and Interoperability
- Maintain and optimize HL7, DICOM, and other interface protocols
- Serve as liaison between PACS and hospital systems such as HIS and EMR
- Ensure seamless data flow and system interoperability
- Test and validate interfaces following system updates or changes
System Updates and Implementation
- Plan and execute PACS software updates, patches, and upgrades
- Lead installation, testing, and implementation of new PACS-related systems and applications
- Participate in system upgrade projects from planning through go-live
- Stay current on PACS technology trends and industry best practices
Help Desk and Support Ticket Management
- Monitor and respond to PACS-related Help Desk tickets
- Document all support interactions and maintain detailed records
- Provide status updates to users via Help Desk or email
- Escalate complex issues to vendors or IT resources as needed
- Analyze support trends to identify opportunities for system improvement
Project and On-Call Support
- Participate in system implementations, migrations, and hardware deployments
- Assist with infrastructure improvements and optimization initiatives
- Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours information systems support, as needed
Required Education and Experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Healthcare Informatics, Radiology, or a related field
- Active certification in one or more of the following:
- Certified Imaging Informatics Professional (CIIP)
- PACS Administrators Registry and Certification Association (PARCA)
- American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) with relevant specialty
- 3 to 5 years of experience in PACS administration or healthcare IT
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate degree in a related field with 4 years of relevant experience, or
- High school diploma with 7 years of extensive PACS or healthcare IT experience
- Ability to obtain a relevant certification within one year of hire
- Demonstrated proficiency with PACS systems and medical imaging workflows
- Strong understanding of HL7 and DICOM standards
