Job Summary:

The Department of Animal Biotechnology & Conservation invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Animal Biotechnology & Conservation, non-tenure track position. The preferred start date for this full-time, nine-month (annually renewable) teaching appointment is August 2026.

The department offers bachelor’s degrees in Wildlife Conservation, Zoo Science, and Small Animal Science. This position entails an in-person teaching load for a full-time faculty member. The ideal candidate is prepared to develop and teach lecture and laboratory undergraduate courses in Wildlife Management & Conservation, Animal Behavior, Exotic Animal Husbandry & Management, and One Health & Climate Change.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and teach courses (combination of laboratory and/or lectures) such as: Wildlife Management & Conservation, Animal Behavior, Exotic Animal Husbandry & Management, and One Health & Climate Change.
  • Provide experiential learning opportunities via laboratory exercises
  • Post and maintain office hours
  • Follow IACUC AUAF guidelines and reporting requirements
  • Advise students individually and participate in recruitment and outcomes assessment activities
  • Serve on faculty committees as assigned or elected
  • Participate in professional development activities to remain current in the field
  • Attend regularly scheduled faculty and department meetings
  • Performs other job-related duties in area of responsibility as assigned

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Commitment to undergraduate teaching and mentoring

  • Ongoing commitment to professional development

Education and Experience:

  • PhD in related field (Wildlife Biology, Zoo Science or similar) preferred. Candidates with a master’s degree in a related field combined with related work experience are also encouraged to apply.
  • Wildlife experience or animal husbandry experience in an AZA accredited zoo is preferred.
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate level or in industry training (animal collection management or laboratory animal technical) programs is preferred.

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

  • Rarely climbing ladders, scaffolds
  • Using tools requiring high dexterity

  • Exposure to moving machinery
  • Exposure to unpleasant odors
  • Exposure to animal fluids, feces and specimens
  • May be exposed to animal bites, scratches and contagious diseases


Selected applicants will be responsible for providing the University with clearances, appropriate to the position, that have been completed within the last 5 years. These clearances include, but are not limited to the Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Fingerprints completed by IDENTGO, Pennsylvania Child Abuse History clearance. Additionally, upon an acceptance of an offer of employment this position will require an official transcript verification.
