Job Summary
This position is located in DC Health's Office of the Director. DC Health promotes health, wellness, and equity across the district, and protects the safety of residents, visitors, and those doing business in the nation’s capital. Integral to this role is a strong commitment to operational excellence. The Deputy Chief of Staff actively fosters a culture of continuous quality improvement within the Department, ensuring that policies and procedures align with these values.
Major Duties And Responsibilities
Attends key agency meetings both with and on behalf of the Chief of Staff, including Executive Leadership Team (ELT) meetings, and Senior Staff meetings, and participates in recommending and formulating policies, strategies, and the setting of priorities to meet the needs of the agency. Oversees and manages the DC Health, Office of Communications, and Community Relations. The Deputy Chief of Staff oversees the office and makes decisions on work issues/problems presented by subordinate supervisor (s) and assigns workload and assignments. Hires, disciplines, trains, evaluates, and promotes subordinate employees. Reviews and analyzes memoranda, policy, reports, and proposals submitted by ELT, and external agencies or organizations as requested by the Chief of Staff, and utilizes a detailed knowledge of the programs, activities, and functions of the District government and its components to effectively carry out policy decisions.
Advises the Chief of Staff on the effectiveness of organizational methods and procedures in the agency and activities under the administrative jurisdiction of the Director, as determined by follow-up actions, general management, and administrative policies, both existing and needed. Assists the Chief of Staff in identifying program goals and the development of specific program delivery objectives. Provides guidance to subordinate personnel, as required. Makes decisions on work problems presented by subordinate employees; advises officials with broader and higher responsibilities on problems involving the relationship of the work of the office supervised to broaden programs, and its impact on such programs. Evaluates the work performance of subordinate employees; ensures reasonable equity of performance standards and rating techniques developed by subordinates; makes and recommends selection for subordinate employee positions and hears and resolves group grievances or serious employee complaints.
Qualifications And Education
Required Qualifications: Individuals must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade (14) level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, and has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
Preferred skill, experience & education: public health knowledge/experience.
Working Conditions / Environment
The incumbent must be able to carry out official duties in a variety of settings and conditions. Routine work will occur primarily in an office setting.
