Job Summary

This position is located in the Facility Management Division (FMD) of the Department of General Services (DGS). The Facility Management Division is responsible for the oversight of the safety, maintenance and repair of District owned properties, including schools, mixed use facilities parks and recreational facilities, fire and police stations as well as District office buildings and facilities.

This position will serve as the assistant to an Area Manager responsible for the day-to-day operations of a group of buildings/facilities within a designated service area totaling approximately one million square feet of space. The incumbent implements the facility management and building operations maintenance, repair, renovation and improvement program for several District Government owned and leased building/facilities and their adjacent grounds.

Duties And Responsibilities

The incumbent will develop, direct and coordinate the activities of chief building engineers in the operations and maintenance of District Government owned building/facility grounds. Interprets new or revised policy, directives and procedures and meets with the supervisor and staff to discuss applicability of these guides on daily operations, changes, long-range program plans and imminent major work projects as well as the impact on current internal management or operational problems. Investigates and writes reports on any discrepancies or complaints.

Makes continuing inspections of District Government owned and leased buildings to ensure proper and efficient performance by assigned trade and contract personnel according to work specifications and work orders as well as their adherence to safety regulations and practices. Reviews supplies and material orders to assure that adequate-but not excessive-inventory is maintained for daily operations, reviews recommendations for survey and replacement of obsolete equipment.

Qualifications And Education

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression

Work Environment

The work involves safety precautions when visiting properties/facilities that require wearing a hard had during walk-throughs, investigations and inspections, also performs assignments in an office setting.

Other Significant Factors

Tour of Duty: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Incumbent is “on-call” to respond to emergency situations twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.

Pay Plan, Series and Grade: CS-1176-12

Salary Range: $80,783.00 - $103,333; based on available funding

Type of Appointment: Career Service (Permanent)

Promotion Potential: No known promotion potential.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Non-Union): This position is not in a collective bargaining unit.

Essential Designation: This position is designated as “Essential”. An “Essential” employee will be required to report to work or stay at work during a declared emergency or government closing. “Essential” employees are not permitted to telework/telecommute during an emergency or government shutdown.

Position Designation: This position has been deemed Safety Sensitive. Accordingly, you must successfully pass a criminal background check and a drug test as a condition of employment and will be subject to periodic criminal background checks and random drug and alcohol screening for the duration of your employment.
