Position Overview:
The Family Law Legal Assistant provides administrative and legal support to attorneys practicing in New Mexico domestic relations matters, including divorce, child custody and timesharing, child support, spousal support, and related family law proceedings. The role requires familiarity with New Mexico court procedures, strong organizational skills, discretion, and the ability to manage sensitive client matters with professionalism and compassion.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare, format, and file family law pleadings and court documents in compliance with New Mexico Rules of Civil Procedure and local district court rules.
- Assist with drafting routine legal documents, including petitions for dissolution of marriage, motions, stipulated orders, notices, affidavits, parenting plans, and child support worksheets.
- Coordinate and manage electronic filing (e-filing) and service of process in New Mexico courts.
- Maintain attorney calendars, court deadlines, hearings, mediations, and client appointments.
- Open, organize, and maintain case files in the firm’s case management system, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Communicate professionally with clients, opposing counsel, court staff, and third-party service providers regarding scheduling, document collection, and procedural matters.
- Assist with discovery preparation and management, including organizing financial records, preparing discovery responses, and tracking compliance deadlines.
- Prepare correspondence, legal forms, and client communications under attorney supervision.
- Assist with billing support and perform general administrative duties as assigned.
- Maintain strict confidentiality, comply with all ethical standards, and firm policies.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree, Paralegal Certificate, or relevant legal education preferred.
- Minimum of [3-5] years of experience as a legal assistant or administrative professional in a law firm, preferably in family law.
- Working knowledge of New Mexico family law procedures, domestic relations forms, and court filing requirements.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and legal case management software.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Professional demeanor and ability to work effectively with clients experiencing emotional stress.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with New Mexico district courts and local filing practices.
- Familiarity with child support guidelines and financial disclosures used in New Mexico family law cases.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency.
