Cyrus Peirce School (Grades 6-8)
Job Summary: Nantucket Public Schools seeks [1] dynamic Science/Engineering for the Cyrus Peirce Middle School (grades 6-8) for the 2026-27 academic year. The purpose of the STEM Encore position is to provide additional opportunities for students to engage in STEM design thinking. The STEM Specialist will facilitate hands-on STEM electives using Project Lead the Way Curriculum as well as local community extensions to add relevancy to Nantucket.
Minimum Requirements:
Knowledge of Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks (Science and Technology/Engineering)
Bachelor’s Degree
MA certification or the ability to be certified in General Science (5-8) or Middle School Math/Science (5-8) or Technology/Engineering (5-12)
Ideal Candidate:
Experience in middle school science and technology/engineering teaching
Passion for teaching science and technology/engineering
Strong knowledge of how to design instruction for three dimensional learning in science
Ability to assess learning using a variety of methods
Strong foundation in student-centered and culturally responsive pedagogy
Knowledge of differentiated instruction and response to intervention
Excellent classroom management skills
SEI endorsement
Ability to collaborate with teachers and administrators
Essential Functions:
Demonstrating appropriate long and short term preparation for classroom instruction using PLTW units and lessons as well as developing opportunities that extend the learning into the Nantucket community
Arranging for guest speakers and/or field trips
Attending PLTW professional development prior to facilitating each new PLTW unit
Holding high expectations for all students and serving as a facilitator of student learning
Organizing and using a variety of teaching techniques, strategies, materials, and technology to maximize the learning of each student, individually and in group settings
Continuously assessing student progress, providing students and parents with specific feedback, and using the results to adjust instruction as needed
Collaborating with colleagues to examine student data, plan curriculum, and ensure appropriate learning experiences for all students
Completing other duties and professional responsibilities determined by administration
