The Trade Compliance Operative Specialist is a primary contact for Import/Export customs processing and trade compliance for the company in North America. This role is about execution of tasks under a given framework/regime set forth in the Global Trade Compliance Policy, global SOPs, and their local adaptations. Internally, the Trade Compliance Operative Specialist serves as the key interface for questions on importing/exporting to and from North America, supporting departments such as R&D, purchasing and sales, as well as engaging with external service providers and regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with legal requirements.

The Trade Compliance Operative Specialist is a primary contact for Import/Export customs processing and trade compliance for the company in North America. This role is about execution of tasks under a given framework/regime set forth in the Global Trade Compliance Policy, global SOPs, and their local adaptations. Internally, the Trade Compliance Operative Specialist serves as the key interface for questions on importing/exporting to and from North America, supporting departments such as R&D, purchasing and sales, as well as engaging with external service providers and regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
Responsibilities
- Act as a primary interface with external partners (e.g., Brokers, Third-party Suppliers) and internal departments (e.g., Sales, Procurement, R&D, Logistics, Regulatory, and Legal, among others)
- Provide control and instruction to service providers and brokers facilitating Customs and FDA clearance, ensuring compliant documentation is used by affiliated companies for imports
- Maintain master data for customs and foreign-trade, including but not limited to HS Codes, Country of Origin, Dual-Use/ECCN, and FDA codes, supporting accurate and efficient import and export processes
- Optimize documentation and processes, and assist management with audit processes and inquiries from CBP, FDA, Census, BIS, FCC, USDA, EPA, DOT, and other regulatory agencies
- Coordinate with internal and external departments, service providers, brokers and forwarders, for efficient and compliant export processing while ensuring accurate documentation and process optimization
- Assist in export control classification (ECCN), support licensing determinations, and compliance with Foreign Trade Regulations (FTR) and EEI (Electronic Export Information) filings, including those handled by freight forwarders and carriers
- Confirm acceptable customs valuation methods and develop classifications for quality, clinical and R&D samples, components, and finished goods exports, in conjunction with subject matter experts
- Conduct restricted party screening through the screening program and support audit processes for exports
- Restricted party screening includes sanctions compliance using a tool and system pre-developed for you (SAP GTS), clearing false positives and escalating where unclear
- Assist in, gathering and reporting metrics (using Excel, Power BI, or Tableau) to support (trade/import/export) compliance insights and business intelligence
- Train in and lead HTS classifications and ECCN determinations, gaining proficiency in SAP and SAP GTS for managing holds on imported/exported goods and screening blocks
- Maintain compliance records as per company policy and with current laws and regulations
- Coordinate with customs brokers and freight forwarders, ensuring alignment on compliance procedures
- Bachelor’s degree in business, political science, public governance, law, engineering or related
- 3 years of relevant experience in trade compliance or import/export operations
- Operational understanding of the ACE and SNAP-R government systems
- Applied knowledge of classifications, export controls, and licensing requirements
- Experience in FDA-regulated industries (e.g., medical devices, pharmaceuticals)
- Proven track record of innovation, enhancing compliance, and implementing process improvements
- Knowledge of SAP GTS and MS Office applications, including data management tools such as Excel, Power BI, or Tableau
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with external partners
- Analytical mindset, able to interpret complex data and identify actionable insights
- Highly organized, process-oriented, and adaptable to shifting priorities; a collaborative team player with a focus on compliance and operational efficiency
- Proven track record of innovation, enhancing compliance, and implementing process improvements
