Role Overview

The Controller will own the Company’s accounting operations in supporting the monthly close process, maintaining accurate financial records, overseeing compliance activities, and driving process improvements. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role provides strategic leadership for the accounting organization and plays a critical part in ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting while supporting the continued growth of the organization. This individual will serve as a subject matter expert and a key business partner across the organization.


The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting professional with strong technical accounting expertise, NetSuite experience, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.


Key Responsibilities

Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting

  • Own and lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Own monthly financial statements and management reporting packages.
  • Ensure timely reporting, accuracy and integrity of the general ledger.
  • Oversee cost accounting, fixed assets, and accounts receivable processes.
  • Lead preparation of the U.S. GAAP-compliant financial statements.
  • Maintain accounting policies and technical accounting guidance.
  • Establish balance sheet reviews and account analyses.
  • Drive accounting automations and system optimizations.


Intercompany Accounting & Consolidations

  • Manage intercompany transactions, reconciliations, and eliminations across legal entities.
  • Prepare consolidation schedules and support multi-entity financial reporting.
  • Ensure timely resolution of intercompany discrepancies.
  • Assist with maintaining entity structures and accounting records.


Tax Compliance & Support

  • Oversee all sales tax compliance activities
  • Support with external tax advisors on federal, state, and local income tax compliance.
  • Manage preparation of tax-related schedules and documentation.
  • Review and maintain tax notices
  • Support tax planning initiatives and compliance requirements.


Internal Controls

  • Support all financial statement audits.
  • Serve as accounting contact for external auditors
  • Oversee audit schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Ensure internal controls, accounting policies, and compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead process improvements that enhance efficiency and accuracy.


Leadership & Team Support

  • Support, coach and develop the accounting team.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Be the trusted resource for accounting and financial matters across the organization.


Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory responsibilities.
  • 3-5 years leading accounting teams
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting.
  • Experience managing month-end close processes and general ledger accounting.
  • Experience partnering with executive leadership.
  • Experience with building scalable accounting processes.
  • Experience with multi-entity and intercompany accounting.
  • Experience supporting sales tax compliance and income tax reporting processes.
  • Strong NetSuite experience required, including reporting and multi-entity environments.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work onsite in San Diego and thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.


Preferred

  • Public accounting experience.
  • Experience within consumer products, supplements, nutraceuticals, e-commerce, or omnichannel businesses.
  • Experience supporting audits and external compliance requirements.
  • Proven ability to identify and implement process improvements.


Key Success Measures

  • Timely and accurate monthly financial reporting.
  • Successful completion of month-end close within established timelines.
  • Strong balance sheet integrity and account reconciliation discipline.
  • Effective management of intercompany accounting and consolidations.
  • Timely and accurate sales tax and tax compliance support.
  • Continued optimization and utilization of NetSuite.
  • Improved accounting processes, controls, and efficiency.
  • Strong partnership with the CFO and cross-functional teams.


Work Location & Schedule

This position follows an enforced hybrid schedule, requiring team members to be present in our San Diego, California office at least four days per week (Monday–Thursday). Fridays are available for remote work. This role also requires attendance at all in-person monthly team meetings and quarterly company events.


Physical Requirements

This role primarily involves office-based work and requires the ability to occasionally lift, carry, or move items up to 20–30 pounds, such as files or office supplies. Employees should be able to sit or stand for extended periods and perform frequent computer-based tasks, including prolonged exposure to a computer screen.


Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this position is $140,000-170,000 annually. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
