Sr Automation & Control Systems Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Automation & Control Systems Engineer to lead the design, implementation, and commissioning of industrial automation solutions. The role focuses on developing reliable PLC and HMI applications, integrating instrumentation and field devices, and delivering robust control systems for production and process environments. The ideal candidate drives projects from concept through handover, ensures compliance with safety and quality standards, and provides technical leadership to crossfunctional teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead design and implementation of PLC-based control systems and HMI applications for industrial processes.
- Develop control logic, ladder/structured text code, and sequence control using RSLogix, Rockwell, or equivalent platforms.
- Design instrument lists, I/O point mapping, and interface architectures; review and produce P&IDs and loop diagrams in collaboration with process engineers.
- Configure and integrate fieldbus and network protocols including Ethernet, Profibus, and Modbus for device communication and supervisory systems.
- Develop and maintain HMI screens, process graphics, alarm management, and operator workflows (e.g., RSView/FactoryTalk).
- Plan and execute FAT, SAT, commissioning, start-up, and system validation activities; troubleshoot and resolve control and instrumentation issues on-site.
- Implement and enforce control system standards, change control, and cybersecurity best practices applicable to industrial control systems.
- Prepare technical specifications, system architecture documents, and as-built drawings; maintain accurate documentation throughout project lifecycle.
- Provide mentoring and technical guidance to junior engineers, technicians, and integrators; collaborate with procurement and contractors to select appropriate hardware and instrumentation.
- Support operations with root-cause analysis, continuous improvement initiatives, and preventative maintenance strategies.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Electrical, Control Systems, Instrumentation, Mechanical Engineering, or related field; or equivalent experience.
- 7 years of hands-on experience in industrial automation, control systems, PLCs, HMIs, and instrumentation in process or manufacturing environments.
- Demonstrated experience programming and commissioning PLCs and developing HMI applications; familiarity with RSLogix, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley platforms, and RSView/FactoryTalk preferred.
- Strong knowledge of control system fundamentals, PID tuning, loop performance, and instrumentation selection.
- Experience integrating industrial networks and protocols such as Ethernet, Profibus, and Modbus; ability to troubleshoot communication issues.
- Proven experience creating and interpreting P&IDs, loop diagrams, I/O lists, and control system documentation.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills; able to coordinate across disciplines and manage multiple priorities.
- Willingness to travel to field sites for commissioning and support; ability to work safely in industrial environments.
- Nice to have: prior work with Rockwell/AllenBradley, RSView/FactoryTalk, security clearance or experience with classified projects, and familiarity with advanced control systems and cybersecurity for ICS.
