Position Overview
Lead and coordinate the electrical maintenance team to ensure reliable, safe, and efficient operation of plant electrical systems and equipment. The role focuses on supervision of preventive and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of motors, drives and control systems, PLC programming and commissioning, safety and compliance with NEC and company policies, and implementing continuous improvement initiatives to maximize uptime and reduce cost.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise, mentor and schedule a multi-disciplinary electrical maintenance team to meet production and maintenance targets.
- Plan, assign and oversee preventive and corrective maintenance on electrical equipment including motors, starters, VFDs, switchgear, MCCs, transformers and power distribution systems.
- Troubleshoot and repair PLCs and control systems (Siemens, Allen-Bradley), including PLC programming, logic debugging and firmware updates.
- Diagnose and repair motor faults; oversee motor repair, rewinds, alignment and balancing; manage motor starters and protection schemes.
- Install, program and commission Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and ensure proper integration with control systems and safety interlocks.
- Maintain and troubleshoot SCADA and HMI systems; verify data integrity, alarms and control sequences.
- Conduct testing and commissioning activities including insulation resistance testing, meggering, multimeter and oscilloscope diagnostics, relay testing and infrared thermography.
- Inspect, maintain and coordinate work on high voltage and low voltage switchgear, circuit breakers and transformers in compliance with applicable codes.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics/blueprints, panel layouts and single-line diagrams; verify wiring and conduit installations.
- Implement and enforce Lockout-Tagout (LOTO), Arc Flash and other electrical safety procedures; lead safety training and incident investigations.
- Perform root cause analysis on repeat failures and implement corrective actions to improve reliability and reduce downtime.
- Manage spare parts inventory, cable terminations, and oversee quality of workmanship for conduit bending, wiring, cable pulling and terminations.
- Coordinate with vendors and contractors for specialty services, repairs and capital projects; manage contractor safety and performance.
- Use CMMS (Maximo or equivalent) to schedule work orders, update asset histories, track maintenance KPIs and drive continuous improvement.
- Support budgeting, cost control and capital project execution; prepare scopes, estimates and technical purchase specifications.
- Apply Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles to maintenance processes to improve response times, reduce waste and increase equipment availability.
Qualifications
- Associate degree, technical diploma, or bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Technology, Industrial Maintenance or equivalent; journeyman electrician certification preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on electrical maintenance experience in an industrial/manufacturing environment with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
- Proven PLC programming and troubleshooting experience with Siemens and Allen-Bradley platforms; familiarity with ladder logic, function block and structured text.
- Strong experience with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), motor control circuits, motor repair and protection devices.
- Working knowledge of switchgear, motor control centers (MCC), transformers, power distribution and both high voltage and low voltage systems.
- Experience with SCADA/HMI systems, relay logic, instrumentation, calibration and control systems.
- Proficiency in testing & commissioning tools and techniques: multimeter, oscilloscope, insulation resistance testing, infrared thermography and relay testing.
- Solid understanding of National Electrical Code (NEC), electrical safety standards, Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) and Arc Flash mitigation practices.
- Hands-on skills in conduit bending, electrical wiring, cable termination, reading schematics/blueprints and basic welding/fabrication.
- Familiarity with pneumatics, hydraulics and mechanical interface on equipment is desirable.
- Experience with CMMS systems (Maximo preferred), SAP and maintenance data entry for work order management and spare parts control.
- Demonstrated experience in root cause analysis, preventive maintenance strategies and continuous improvement (Lean/Six Sigma) initiatives.
- Strong leadership, communication and team-building skills with the ability to develop technicians and enforce accountability.
- Project management experience with budgeting, vendor management, procurement and ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Availability to work rotating shifts, overtime and respond to emergency call-ins as needed; valid drivers license and ability to wear PPE and perform physical tasks.
