Controls Engineer - Food Manufacturing
Position Overview
As a Controls Engineer in our food manufacturing operations, you will design, program, commission and support automation systems that ensure safe, efficient and compliant production. You will lead control system projects from concept through start-up, optimize process control and perform troubleshooting to minimize downtime while ensuring adherence to food safety standards and CIP validation. This role works closely with operations, maintenance, electrical, quality and vendor partners to deliver robust, maintainable automation solutions and integrate robotics and MES communications where required.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, program and commission PLC control systems using Allen-Bradley (RSLogix/Studio 5000) and Siemens (Step7/TIA Portal) platforms.
- Develop and implement HMI screens and SCADA solutions (Wonderware/AVEVA) for process monitoring, control and data visualization.
- Configure, tune and maintain PID control loops and other control strategies to optimize process performance and product quality.
- Lead integration of robotics and automated equipment, coordinating with OEMs and integrators to ensure smooth mechanical and control interfaces.
- Plan, execute and document CIP validation activities and ensure automation systems support food safety standards and compliance (e.g., HACCP, BRC, SQF as applicable).
- Support MES/DTI integration for data transfer, traceability and production reporting; collaborate with IT and production teams to ensure reliable communications.
- Perform commissioning, site start-up, testing and FAT/SAT activities; rapidly troubleshoot and resolve electrical, control and automation faults during production and outages.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Automation or related field, or equivalent experience.
- 5 years of controls engineering experience in food and beverage or process manufacturing preferred.
- Proven hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley RSLogix/Studio 5000 and Siemens Step7/TIA Portal programming environments.
- Experience designing HMIs and implementing SCADA solutions, particularly Wonderware/AVEVA.
- Demonstrated experience with CIP validation and familiarity with food safety standards and regulatory requirements (HACCP, BRC, SQF, etc.).
- Experience integrating robotics and automation equipment, including OEM coordination and I/O/network integration.
- Strong knowledge of PLC-based PID control implementation and tuning.
- Familiarity with electrical distribution systems, motor control, panel design and relevant safety codes.
- Willingness to travel between sites as required and participate in shift or emergency support on occasion.
