Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead accounting and financial reporting for a private equity or real estate platform. The Controller will own month-end close, financial statement preparation, investor and fund reporting, internal controls, and tax and audit coordination. This role partners closely with the CFO and investment teams to ensure accurate, timely financial information, support transactions and valuations, and drive process and system improvements across portfolios and funds.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all aspects of the month-end and year-end close process, including preparation and review of consolidated GAAP financial statements.
- Prepare and deliver timely investor, fund and portfolio-level reporting, including NAV calculations, capital call and distribution schedules, and fund performance metrics.
- Oversee and improve accounting policies, internal controls and SOX-ready procedures; coordinate internal control testing and remediation.
- Manage external audits, tax compliance and regulatory filings; serve as primary liaison with auditors, tax advisors and other external service providers.
- Supervise, coach and develop the accounting team, including hiring, performance management and workload prioritization.
- Support financial planning and analysis activities: budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis and cash flow management.
- Partner with investment and asset management teams on transaction accounting, acquisitions/dispositions, asset-level valuations, lease accounting (ASC 842) and investor due diligence.
- Implement and maintain financial systems and ERP solutions (e.g., Yardi, MRI, NetSuite) and drive process automation and reporting improvements.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and industry practices for real estate, REITs or private equity structures and support fund-level structuring, waterfall and carried interest calculations.
- Oversee treasury functions including bank relationships, cash management and funding mechanics for capital calls, distributions and capital projects.
Qualifications
- Proven experience serving as a Controller or senior accounting leader within private equity, real estate, asset management or a related financial services environment.
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field; advanced degree (MBA/MST) preferred.
- Strong technical accounting expertise in GAAP and fund/partnership accounting, including experience with consolidation, valuations, revenue recognition and lease accounting.
- Demonstrated experience managing audits, tax filings and regulatory reporting; strong internal controls and SOX knowledge.
- Proven leadership skills with experience building and managing high-performing accounting teams and cross-functional relationships.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with accounting ERPs and reporting tools (examples: Yardi, MRI, NetSuite, and business intelligence platforms).
- Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, transaction-oriented environment.
- Required: Hands-on Controller experience with responsibility for financial close and reporting processes.
- Nice to have: CPA designation, prior experience in Real Estate or REIT operations, Private Equity fund accounting, or Private Credit portfolio accounting.
