We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controller to lead the accounting and financial operations of a growing construction company in Denver. This individual will oversee all accounting functions, ensure accurate financial reporting, and provide strategic financial insights to support business decisions. The ideal candidate will bring strong construction industry experience, including job costing and percentage-of-completion accounting, along with hands-on expertise in Sage ERP systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and fixed assets
- Manage the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting
- Prepare and analyze financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Maintain and improve job costing systems to ensure accurate project profitability tracking
- Oversee revenue recognition using percentage-of-completion (WIP schedules)
- Prepare and review Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and support project managers with financial insights
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis processes
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations, including sales/use tax and contractor-specific requirements
- Manage external audits, tax filings, and relationships with outside CPA firms
- Develop and maintain internal controls and accounting policies
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff
- Partner with operations and project management teams to improve financial performance and cost controls
- Leverage Sage ERP to optimize accounting workflows, reporting, and system integrations
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred)
- 7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role
- Prior experience in the construction industry required
- Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion accounting
- Hands-on experience with Sage ERP (e.g., Sage 100 Contractor, Sage 300 CRE, or similar)
- Deep understanding of GAAP and construction accounting practices
- Experience managing audits and working with external auditors
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Advanced proficiency in Excel
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA or CMA designation
- Experience in a mid-sized or high-growth construction company
- Familiarity with construction project management software integrations
- Experience implementing or optimizing ERP systems
