What are the responsibilities and job description for the Student Learning Coach, Alpha - $120,000/year USD position at Crossover?
- $120,000/year W2 salary, paid weekly; health, dental, and vision benefits beginning on day one
- On-site at an Alpha K-8 campus in Beverly Hills, CA; La Jolla (San Diego), CA; Palo Alto, CA; Piedmont, CA; South Bay (LA), CA; Greenwich, CT; Boca Raton, FL; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Miami, FL; Miami Beach, FL; Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Chicago, IL; Boston, MA; Raleigh, NC; Portland, OR; or Seattle, WA (relocation support available)
The most compassionate act you can offer a student who reaches 99% of their goal is to refuse to accept it as finished. If this expectation unsettles you, this role is not the right fit. If it energizes you because maintaining high standards is how you demonstrate belief in a student's ability to succeed, read on.
At Alpha, students complete their academic work through AI-powered applications. No lectures. No textbooks. Approximately 60% of your time is spent facilitating one-hour life-skills workshops covering public speaking, focus, and constructive feedback exchange. Around 30% of your time involves sitting with students individually or in small groups, analyzing their progress using Coachbot analytics, and guiding each toward their weekly app targets. The remaining 10% is dedicated to data analysis that informs your coaching strategy for the week ahead. You will not follow a rigid script; workshops serve as frameworks, and top performers in this role customize them and create new content when needs arise.
A semester is successful when at least 90% of students in your cohort achieve their weekly app goals, demonstrate measurable life-skill improvement on Test2Pass, and rate their experience with you at 4/5 or higher. Falling short on any of these three metrics means the job was not done. As you demonstrate your ability to maintain high expectations, you become eligible for promotion to Lead Guide — mentoring newer Guides while continuing to lead a cohort — and eventually to Campus Lead, where you oversee an entire school and manage parent engagement.
If you are drawn to traditional teaching methods, prefer pre-built curriculum, or view warmth and rigor as incompatible, this position is not for you. If your background includes athletic coaching, camp counseling, tutoring students through difficult challenges, or performing for middle-school audiences, the final step before receiving an offer is spending a full day on campus coaching actual Alpha students. If that prospect excites you most, submit your application today.
What You Will Be Doing
- Facilitating one-hour life-skills workshops for K-8 cohorts covering public speaking, focus, feedback exchange, and other essential skills, customizing the framework and creating new sessions when you identify unmet needs
- Conducting daily individual and small-group motivation sessions that drive every student toward their weekly app targets, leveraging Coachbot analytics, Alpha's incentive structures (school currency, leaderboards), and your personal connection with each student to overcome resistance
- Delivering the Test2Pass (Alpha's mastery-based assessment) for each life skill, and providing continued coaching to students until they achieve passing scores
- Tailoring your coaching approach across a broad age spectrum, from kindergarteners requiring high energy and physical activity to 8th graders needing direct conversations and personal accountability
- Analyzing weekly cohort performance data in Coachbot, pinpointing students falling behind, and modifying your coaching tactics for the upcoming week based on data insights
- Teaching lessons at a whiteboard; academic content is delivered through the apps, not by you
- Creating an entire curriculum from scratch; you begin with a tested framework and personalize it with your unique style and narrative approach
- Passively monitoring students at computers; motivation in this role is direct, personal, and persistent
- Working through bureaucratic approval processes to secure resources for struggling students; when a student requires additional coaching time, you decide and implement immediately
- Grading assignments, conducting standardized test preparation, or handling parent communication; Campus Leads manage parent interactions, and the other tasks do not exist in this model
Ensure every student in your K-8 cohort achieves their weekly learning targets, masters each life skill, and finishes the year having valued their experience with you.
Basic Requirements
- Willing to work in-person at an Alpha campus in Beverly Hills, CA; La Jolla (San Diego), CA; Palo Alto, CA; Piedmont, CA; South Bay (LA), CA; Greenwich, CT; Boca Raton, FL; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Miami, FL; Miami Beach, FL; Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Chicago, IL; Boston, MA; Raleigh, NC; Portland, OR; or Seattle, WA (relocation support provided)
- Bachelor's degree in any subject
- At least 3 years of direct experience working with K-8 students (classroom teaching, coaching, tutoring, camp counseling, or youth program leadership)
- A concrete example you can describe of motivating a K-8 student toward a challenging goal: the goal itself, your actions, and the result
- Comfort with AI managing instructional content while you concentrate on motivation and life-skills coaching
- Legal authorization to work in the US without visa sponsorship
- Background in youth sports coaching, debate, camp leadership, theater, or after-school programs where you held direct responsibility for motivating children toward defined objectives
