Summary:

Paraeducators are an important and valued part of our Crescent community and we are always looking for the best qualified individuals to join our team. We are currently hiring for both a Special Education Paraeducator, and a General Education Paraeducator, which includes student supervision during lunch, recess and passing times. The Paraeducator will work in the Crescent School District to provide social-emotional and instructional support for students under the supervision of the building principal or designee and works closely with the classroom teacher(s) and other instructional assistants. Daily interaction with student and school staff, district program staff, and to varying degree with parents. . This position requires a caring and patient individual who is able to work collaboratively with teachers and other staff members to ensure that students receive the necessary support to succeed.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Provide one-on-one support to students in the classroom.
  • Assist with classroom management and organization.
  • Assist students requiring support in addressing personal care and hygiene needs due to medical condition and/or physical limitations for the purpose of allowing students to function in school environment. With proper training, performs assistive activities such as feeding, toileting, diapering, and catheterization.
  • Work with teachers to develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) for students.
  • Monitor and implement behavioral plan for students with behavior disorders or other conditions for the purpose of assisting in meeting special education students' needs, protecting the safety of the child and others, and providing a consistent environment.
  • Participate in team meetings and professional development opportunities.
  • Monitor and supervise students within a variety of school environments (rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, locker rooms, lunchroom, study and detention rooms, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, field trips, etc.)
  • May be required to work outdoors, including inclement weather, for the purpose of aiding students and providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Follow all district policies and procedures related to student safety and confidentiality.

Requirements:

  • Must have high school diploma and have attained at least an Associate's Degree or 72 hours of post-secondary education, or passed state test to demonstrate knowledge and ability to assist in instructing students as minimum level of education.
  • Safety Care or Right Response certification preferred, but we can train.
  • Ability to pass Washington State Patrol background check and any further established background requirements.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics; or knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate.
  • Knowledge and experience in working with ALL students, including disabled students with mild to severe disabilities.
  • Working and current knowledge of childhood academic, social, and physical development and best practices.
  • Knowledge, skills and experience regarding effective methods and techniques for working successfully with students including those with cognitive, behavioral, neurological and physical disabilities.
  • Specific evidence of ability and desire to consistently understand and be sensitive to individual needs and strengths.
  • Work history of treating adults and students with respect, openness to ideas of others, patience and encouragement.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a team environment with a variety of staff, students, parents, and the public in a multi-cultural, diverse, socio-economic setting.
  • Work cooperatively and harmoniously with staff, administration, parents and community.
  • Skills in completing assigned tasks.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff and parents using tact, courtesy, and good judgment.
  • Work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail to meet deadlines in an atmosphere with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment, computers and adaptive devices.
  • Keep work organized and carry out duties effectively and efficiently.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Be dependable, including good habits in attendance and punctuality.
  • Be flexible and adapt to changes in plans or activities on short notice.
  • Ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
