Position Overview
The Merchant is responsible for planning, curating and optimizing assortments across channels to maximize sales, margin and customer satisfaction. This role combines commercial strategy, vendor and inventory management, pricing and analytics to deliver compelling merchandise assortments and seamless omnichannel experiences. The Merchant will partner with buying, supply chain, marketing and digital teams to execute category strategy, drive assortment and SKU productivity, and ensure efficient replenishment and sell-through.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute category and assortment strategies to meet sales, margin and inventory targets across physical and digital channels.
- Planogram and visual merchandising execution to maximize product visibility and conversion in-store and online.
- Manage SKU lifecycle including introduction, rationalization and end-of-life planning to optimize assortment productivity.
- Set and monitor pricing strategy, promotions and markdowns to protect margin while maximizing sell-through.
- Lead demand forecasting, replenishment and purchase order management processes to maintain availability and minimize excess inventory.
- Collaborate with vendors and suppliers to negotiate terms, manage purchase orders and maintain strong supplier relationships (SRM).
- Oversee EDI flows and coordinate with retail systems (SAP Retail, Oracle Retail, Blue Yonder/JDA) to ensure data integrity and timely fulfillment.
- Analyze sales, inventory and customer data using advanced Excel, SQL and BI tools (Tableau, Power BI) to identify trends and opportunities and inform decision-making.
- Manage omnichannel merchandising initiatives including marketplace channels (Shopify, Magento, Amazon Seller Central) and POS integrations to deliver consistent customer experiences.
- Work with CRM, web analytics (Google Analytics) and digital teams to tailor assortments and promotions for targeted customer segments.
- Create and maintain planograms, inventory reports and replenishment models to support store and DC operations.
- Coordinate with visual design teams using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to develop compelling creative assets and product imagery.
- Provide regular performance reporting and actionable insights to stakeholders to drive continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Business, Retail Management, Supply Chain, Marketing or a related field.
- 3-5 years of merchandising, category management or retail buying experience in a mid-to-large retail or e-commerce environment.
- Proven experience with assortment planning, SKU management, inventory management, replenishment and purchase order management.
- Strong vendor management and supplier relationship management (SRM) experience; comfortable negotiating commercial terms and managing EDI relationships.
- Hands-on experience with retail systems such as SAP Retail, Oracle Retail or Blue Yonder (JDA) and POS platforms.
- Advanced analytical skills with demonstrated proficiency in Excel (including modeling), SQL and BI tools (Tableau, Power BI).
- Practical experience with omnichannel platforms and marketplaces including Shopify, Magento and Amazon Seller Central.
- Familiarity with retail analytics, demand forecasting methods, pricing strategy and planogramming.
- Experience with visual merchandising and basic graphic tools such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills; able to influence stakeholders and drive project delivery.
- Detail-oriented, organized and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced retail environment.
