Assistant Public Works Director
The City of Magnolia is seeking a dedicated Assistant Public Works Director to join our Public Works Department. This full-time, exempt position supports the Public Works Director in planning, organizing, and managing the City’s public infrastructure, including water and wastewater systems. Responsibilities include overseeing departmental operations, supervising staff, coordinating projects, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing budgets, and serving as Acting Director when needed. The role also involves project management, contractor oversight, citizen relations, and collaboration with various departments to ensure the delivery of high-quality municipal services.
The ideal candidate will possess thorough knowledge of public works operations, strong leadership and supervisory skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. They should demonstrate effective communication abilities, both written and verbal, and excel in building positive working relationships with city officials, employees, contractors, and the public. A commitment to teamwork, safety, accountability, and customer service is essential. Candidates should be skilled in interpreting engineering plans, managing projects and budgets, and motivating staff to achieve departmental goals.
- Associate degree in Public Administration, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
- At least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in public works operations, maintenance, or construction, including a minimum of two (2) years in a supervisory role.
- Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License (Class B CDL preferred).
- TCEQ Class C or higher Water and/or Wastewater Operator License preferred, or ability to obtain within one year of employment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant municipal software systems.
- Completion of supervisory or management training preferred.
