Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Coroner and the Chief Deputy Coroner, the full-time Supervising Deputy Coroneris responsible for independently conducting or supervising others' death investigations, requiring knowledge ofmedical terminology, medical records review, forensic medicine, basic pathology of death and the ability to notify and work with next of kin of a decedent. The full-time Deputy Coroner Supervisor will also haveknowledge and experience with investigative practices and possess the ability to handle the physical andemotional demands of visiting death scenes and trauma scenes, including working with the deceased. They willpossess the interpersonal skills required to interact effectively with grieving family members; have good written and oral communication skills; assist the Coroner/Chief Deputy Coroner with community education/outreach when available; assist the Coroner/Chief Deputy Coroner with additional staff training/inservices;assist in cremation authorizations; possess computer skills such as electronic death registration, report writing,case management and email.

Responsibilities
Fields office telephone calls when available; issues death certificates; assists in identifying decedents; accesses medical records, when indicated, to help determine cause/manner of death; receives reports of deaths from physicians, nurses, health care facilities, county control dispatchers, funeral directors or other persons; determines if case is within legal jurisdiction of the Coroner; prepares written documentation of reported deaths; conducts death investigations including interviewing, compiling reports, visiting scenes of death or injury, taking forensic photographs and collecting evidence; documents physical evidence at scenes, including weapons, drugs, clothing, notes and bodily fluids; inventories and secures prescription medicines found at scene, placing them in locked safe at office and coordinating their destruction after inventory; coordinates transport of decedent from scene of death; coordinates autopsy, if indicated; draws toxicology, if indicated; assists in finding next of kin; assists in disseminating press releases, if indicated; notifies nextof kin of decedent’s death; releases remains to funeral home personnel when indicated; testifies in court, if required; reviews autopsy/toxicology findings with families of decedents, as indicated; assists in approving cremation authorizations; assists in submitting specific case data to multiple entities; assists in supervising part-time deputies on a rotating weekend basis with other supervising deputies; rotates to all three shifts, as needed, so that all three shifts have fulltime coverage; assists in scheduling of part-time deputies as needed; assists in staff training and community education as needed. May be required to stay beyond shift or assist PT deputy on weekend to respond to and complete case(s), as this is a salaried position.
Essential Requirements
- A two or four-year degree in a natural sciences discipline or a death investigation or health-sciences-related field (e.g., nursing, forensic science or criminal justice) is highly desirable.
- Three or more years of experience in death investigation is preferred.
- Must have received Basic Coroner certification from State of PA.
- Registry Certification by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) is preferred or will be required within 18 months of FT employment in this role.
- Must maintain ABMDI certification while employed in this role.
