The Solid Waste Maintenance Worker helps keep Mono County’s landfills and transfer stations operating safely, efficiently, and in compliance with environmental regulations. This position performs a wide range of duties that support daily facility operations, including monitoring incoming waste loads, operating weigh scales, collecting fees, directing traffic, maintaining grounds and equipment, managing recyclables and special waste streams, and assisting with hazardous and universal waste handling. The role combines customer service, equipment operation, record keeping, and hands-on maintenance work in an outdoor environment that serves residents, businesses, and visitors throughout the County.

Mono County’s Solid Waste Division is dedicated to protecting public health, preserving the environment, and providing reliable waste management services across a geographically diverse region of the Eastern Sierra. The team operates landfills, transfer stations, recycling programs, and special waste collection services that support both local communities and the millions of visitors who travel through Mono County each year. Employees work closely with the public, partner agencies, and other County departments to promote safe disposal practices, recycling, and environmental stewardship while helping maintain the exceptional natural beauty of the region.

The position is well suited for someone who enjoys practical problem-solving, working independently, and contributing to the health, safety, and environmental quality of Mono County’s communities.

Training and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Prior experience as a landfill gate attendant or one year of experience operating light equipment such as forklifts or backhoes or two years’ experience in retail sales performing teller or cashier activities.

Special Requirements:

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

Ability to obtain certification in a 40-hour HAZWOPER training course within 12 months of hire and maintain that certification with annual refresher training.


Salary : $57,053 - $69,348
