Under supervision, the Correctional Deputy is a dual-role, entry-level position responsible for maintaining the safety, security, and orderly operation of the County jail while also performing emergency dispatch functions. Incumbents supervise inmates during booking, housing, meals, and movement within the facility; assist with booking, classification, and release processes; and maintain accurate records and logs.

In addition to custody duties, Correctional Deputies receive and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatch law enforcement and public safety personnel, and operate communications systems such as CLETS and NCIC. This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-responsibility environment, exercising sound judgment and professionalism in both custody and dispatch settings. As knowledge and experience are gained, incumbents may advance to the Correctional Deputy II level.

Successful candidates are adaptable and eager to learn, with the ability to balance custody responsibilities with dispatch operations. They value teamwork, accountability, and public service, and are prepared to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. A strong work ethic, integrity, and the ability to build professional working relationships are essential for success in this role.

The Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to protecting life and property, maintaining public safety, and providing professional law enforcement and correctional services to the community. The Corrections Division operates the County jail, ensuring the safe, secure, and humane custody of individuals in detention, while the Dispatch Center serves as a critical communications hub for emergency and non-emergency public safety response.

  • Holiday Pay: 7% additional compensation
  • Retirement: CalPERS retirement plan
  • Health Coverage: Cafeteria-style benefits plan including medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and eligible dependents
  • Paid Time Off:
    • Vacation: Starting at 80 hours annually, increasing with years of service (up to 160 hours)
    • Sick Leave: 8 hours per month
  • Overtime & Compensation Enhancements:
    • Call-back overtime with a 4-hour minimum
    • Compensatory Time Off (CTO) accrual up to 200 hours
  • Shift Differentials:
    • 4% for utility shifts
    • 6% for night shifts
  • Specialty Pay:
    • Bilingual Pay: 5% (when certified)
    • Field Training Officer (FTO) Pay: 5% while assigned a trainee
  • Education Incentives:
    • Up to $700 annually for job-related education expenses
    • Degree Incentive Pay:
      • 2.5% for Associate’s Degree
      • 5% for Bachelor’s Degree
  • Uniform & Equipment:
    • $600 annual uniform allowance
    • Issued duty equipment

    • Paid training including required certifications and academy completion

Minimum Qualifications:
Required Experience and Education:
  • Any achievement of a passing score on a Board of Corrections approved written Entrance Correctional Officer Examination, and achievement of a passing score on an oral qualifications appraisal interview.
  • Ability to successfully pass an intensive background investigation as required by P.O.S.T. standards, including fingerprint and criminal history checks.
  • Possession of appropriate physical and mental qualifications to pass a Public Safety Officer physical entrance examination and psychological entrance examination.
  • Successful completion of the California Penal Code 832 training and  STC Jail Core Academy within one (1) year of initial employment. Successful completion of a 120-hour Basic Complaint and Dispatcher's Course.
  • Possession of an appropriate valid California Driver's License
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain this knowledge would be some previous experience in working with people in a setting requiring group control. Also, completion of high school or the equivalent.

Salary : $59,578 - $79,856
