Los Angeles County is under a Department of Justice Consent Decree to improve conditions and mental health care in County jails, as well as supporting justice-involved populations post-release. We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to help us in the mission of providing a range of services both in the jail and community. The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Staff Assistant I vacancies within Health Services related to the DOJ Decree.

Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.

Before the end of your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%.

Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Staff Assistant I.

Definition

Has responsibility for the housekeeping and record keeping functions and conducts administrative studies of internal operations and procedures as an assistant to the manager of a line operation in a county department.

Classification Standards

Positions allocable to this class work for managers of line organizations of County departments and perform assignments which are heavily oriented toward coordination and liaison activities related to clerical supervision, procurement, procedures, report preparation and records maintenance, and intradepartmental services; the consequences of action are generally restricted to the operating unit served.

Essential Job Functions

Analyzes and makes recommendations to the unit manager for the resolution of problems of work procedure and space allocation; and may participate in the implementation of changes resulting from recommendations.

Prepares reports and projections of workload and staffing for the manager of the unit.

Coordinates and resolves problems between the unit served and departmental housekeeping, payroll, personnel, and reproduction services.

Has responsibility for evaluating, ordering maintaining, loaning, and inventorying supplies and equipment, and for resolving procurement problems with the departmental supply officer.

Supervises clerical personnel with responsibility for assigning and reviewing work, orientation, training, development and evaluation of work performance.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Training And Experience

One year's experience in either:

  • a staff capacity* analyzing and making recommendations for the solution of problems of organization, procedure, program, budget, or personnel -OR-
  • a highly responsible secretarial capacity** -OR-
  • a responsible supervisory clerical capacity.***

Special Requirements Information

  • In the County of Los Angeles, staff capacity is defined as: Work in an advisory capacity to line' managers to provide program and administrative support.
  • Work includes assisting and supporting administration by doing research, analysis, and making recommendations to line managers on matters such as the solution of problems of organization, procedure, program, budget, or personnel for accomplishing work objectives.
  • Work under the general supervision of the line or division manager.
  • In the County of Los Angeles, highly responsible secretarial capacity is defined as: functioning as secretary to either (1) the head of a major section in a large and complex department, (2) the head of a minor section in Health Services, or (3) the head of a major unit in either (a) a department headed by an elected official of the County of Los Angeles, (b) a department headed by an appointed official who provides immediate advisory services to the Board of Supervisors, or (c) the Department of the Public Defender.
  • In the County of Los Angeles, a responsible supervisory clerical capacity is defined as:

supervising a large number of employees performing general and specialized office clerical work or a smaller number performing more diversified and difficult duties.

PHYSICAL CLASS II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.
