 Definition: Renders professional medical services to patients as part of a post graduate educational program under the supervision of medical staff. 

Classification standards: Positions allocable to this class work under general direction of the medical team and are responsible for treating patients in a medical specialty field to a variety of patients during your time with us in a hospital approved for such training. Those in this class receive varying degrees of direction by physicians and medical staff in providing therapeutic care and treatments based on the amount of training and knowledge gained in the medical specialty. Positions in this class follow established department policy, procedures, and guidelines as determined by medical specialties and sub-specialties.
Some of your responsibilities will include: 
  • Performs physician duties by providing specific medical care and treatment advised by the physician. 
  • Examines, diagnoses and treats patients in admitting and treatment rooms, clinics, wards and special services. 
  • Works with hospital and clinical staff regarding care to patients. 
  • Renders emergency medical care. 
  • Develops and details a plan of care and treatment based on patient diagnosis, history and examination. 
  • Re-evaluates patients individually and as a part of a patient care team on a routine basis to note condition and progress and modify patient care plans according to patient progress. 
  • Orders and prescribes specific medications and monitor for effects and adverse reactions on patients. 
  • Orders and interprets findings of diagnostic studies and reports to medical staff. 
  • Documents treatment on patients according to policy and/or JCAHO standards. 
  • Keeps patient case records current and prepares reports; fills out forms and corresponds with other parties involved with patients maintaining confidentiality according to State and Federal laws and hospital and clinical policies. 
  • Provides emergency care to patients as advised by medical staff.
REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:

LICENSE: A California State Physician's and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Medical Board of California or the Osteopathic Medical Board of California. Appointees may present a letter acknowledging registration with the Medical Board of California or the Osteopathic Medical Board of California. Following appointment, appointees must present proof of having successfully passed the first State Board examination following appointment. Appointees may present a letter from the Medical Board of California or the Osteopathic Medical Board of California acknowledging application for a reciprocity certificate. Following appointment, applicants must present proof of having received a reciprocity certificate or a California State Physician's and Surgeon's Certificate. 
 
In lieu of a license, an appointee must have:
 
1. Specific authorization from an approved medical school to participate in the professional activities of a department in that school
 
  -AND-
 
 2. Applied for and received approval from the Medical Board of California or the Osteopathic Medical Board of California to participate in a post graduate educational program where such specific authorization has been granted. If the candidate is a graduate of a foreign medical school, he must have received certification to participate in a post-graduate training program from the educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates, which is approved by the American Medical Association. A graduate of an International medical school must have received a California State Physician's and Surgeon's Certificate by the last day of their 36th month of training.
 
PHYSICAL CLASS:
3 - Moderate. This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working or irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Post medical school degree experience in medical practice

EXAMINATION CONTENT 

This examination, weighted 100%, will consist of an evaluation of experience and desirable qualifications based upon your responses to the application and supplemental questionnaire. 

A score of 70% or higher on this examination is required to be placed on the register.

Eligibility and Vacancy Information: Candidates who passed the examination are placed on an eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months. We will use this register to fill vacancies as they occur. The eligible register for this examination will be used to fill vacancies in the Department of Mental Health. In lieu of traditional banding, an alternative banding procedure may be employed consistent with Civil Service Rule11.01(D).

Available shift: 
Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

The acceptance of the submitted application will depend on the Minimum Requirements are clearly met. Your online application must show complete education and work experience information vital to evaluate applicants qualifications. Education information section must include name and address of school attended, complete dates attended, name of course/s taken, number of units earned, and degree/s earned. Work experience section must include job title, employer name and address, name of work area/facility, actual payroll title held and not the working and/or functional titles, from/to dates of employment including month, day and year, total number of months, total number of hours worked per week - not a range of hours (full or part-time), and complete and detailed description of related job duties. If range of hours is provided, experience will be prorated based on the lowest number of hours worked per week. LIST separately each job experience to be evaluated. Information provided is considered provisional and requires verification. Applicants may be rejected at any stage of the selection process. 

Important notes:
