Position/Program Information

The County of Los Angeles is excited to announce our search for the next Chief Deputy of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs! This important executive role will direct and oversee all operations in the Department, which includes ensuring adequate staff levels necessary to provide assistance to Los Angeles County veterans and their dependents in obtaining benefits and entitlements, create new trade-related/civilian career-oriented assistance programs for military-transitioning veterans, as well as the management, operation, and oversight of Bob Hope Patriotic Hall.

In addition to providing executive direction and oversight in all planning and execution of the organization’s mission and goals, the Chief Deputy will oversee 70 personnel and an operating budget of $23 million.

This role will be expected to thoroughly interact with the various local, State, and federal level veteran-oriented organizations, establish relationships and exercise rapport with elected officials and other important stakeholders, interact with State legislators and help influence the creation of positive legislation for veterans and their families, as well as serve as the Board’s key advisor in all matters related to veterans and the programs that the Department oversees.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in any academic field.
  • Minimum of five years of demonstrated management experience in leading major administrative areas such as personnel, budget, contracts, risk management, and/or facilities management of a major division or bureau in a County department, or major division of a complex business.
  • Proven leadership and demonstrated experience in developing, managing, and expanding programs in collaboration with individuals, groups, non-profit organizations, elected officials, advocacy groups, and other stakeholders, that promote access, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated experience in finance, budget development, resource allocation, and revenue generation.
  • All applicants must have a valid California Class “C” driver’s license or ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out essential job-related functions.

Veteran’s Credit

Pursuant to the County Charter and County policy, in all open competitive examinations (i.e., examinations open to everyone), the County of Los Angeles will add a credit of 10 percent of the total credits specified for such examination to the final passing score of an honorably discharged veteran, as well as the spouse of a deceased or disabled veteran, who served in the Armed Forces of the United States under specific conditions.
