Examples of Duties:

• As a crew member, assists in the work involved in installing, maintaining, and repairing water mains and pipelines, including cutting, threading, bending, and reaming pipes, melting lead, caulking pipe joints with lead, installing and replacing valves, hydrants, and other fittings, repairing main breaks and service leaks, tapping mains to connect new services, excavating and backfilling trenches by means of hand or pneumatic tools, opening and closing valves to facilitate work, notifying services as to length of shutdowns, and cutting bricks and mixing concrete;

• Maintains pipeline areas, storage tank, and meter sites by cutting weeds and brush;

• Uses pipe dies, power cutting and threading machines, hammer, chisels, reamers, wrenches, saws, and caulking tools;

• Handles heavy pipes and fittings;

• Flushes and cleans mains, reservoirs, and tanks;

• Installs meters and meter boxes;

• Drives equipment whenever needed to move equipment and to carry supplies and materials;

• May operate equipment such as winch, jackhammer, compressor or trench digger; and

• Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Training and Experience:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school; and

• one (1) year of experience assisting in the installation and maintenance of pipelines and appurtenances.

Tests:

Applicants will be required to qualify on an appropriate examination.

The examination will consist of a qualifying written examination.

• Please note exams are held ONLY on Kaua'i. We do NOT conduct testing in other jurisdictions.

• When attending the qualifying written exam, please be prompt. There will be no admittance if you are late.

• No spectators are allowed at testing site(s).

• The written examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of May 25, 2026.

License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Hawaii type 3 or equivalent).
