Job Description
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class is responsible for operating a Light Transit Vehicle to transport passengers, including the general public, elderly, disabled and handicapped on deviated fixed or demand response routes from bus stops or their homes throughout Davidson County to various Social Services sites, hospitals, doctor’s offices, etc. Work generally requires the employee to assist passengers entering and exiting the vehicle and to perform minor maintenance on vehicles. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Route Supervisor.
Illustrative Examples of Work
- Operates a 15-24 passenger vehicle.
- Provides assistance and supervision to passengers with special needs.
- Assists passengers in wheelchairs and operates the wheelchair lift.
- Assists passengers entering and exiting vehicles as required.
- Picks up passengers as required and transports to various destinations following prescribed route.
- Attends quarterly and annual safety training as required.
- Operates assigned vehicle in a safe manner; follows all safety rules and laws.
- Keeps assigned vehicle clean, both inside and outside.
- Performs minor maintenance on vehicles.
- Completes work order to report mechanical problems with vehicles.
- Keeps accurate records and vehicle logs.
- Adheres to the department’s safety rules and regulations.
- Performs other related duties as required.

Physical Requirements
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity to operate oversized vehicles.
- Must be able to work in both inside and outside environmental conditions.
- May be subject to exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body.
Education and Experience
- Graduation from high school and some experience operating a passenger vehicle; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses and Certifications
- Possession of a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver license is required.
Employee must obtain a “Passenger” endorsement to their North Carolina Commercial Driver License within 60 Days of hire.
