OVERVIEW
The Youth Engagement Specialist provides direct, skill-based behavioral health services to youth with significant emotional and behavioral challenges who are enrolled in Wraparound services.
This role supports youth and families through a combination of Habilitation, Skills Training and Development, Family Training and Support (FST), and Respite services, all of which are tied to individualized treatment goals.
The Youth Engagement Specialist plays a critical role in helping youth build the skills needed for emotional regulation, healthy relationships, decision-making, and successful functioning at home and in the community.
This position helps youth develop skills that change life trajectories, supports families in staying intact and stable, directly contributes to reduced system involvement and improved outcomes and plays a key role in a team-based, evidence-informed wraparound approach
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Conducts functional and contextual behavioral assessments to identify patterns and triggers, and develop ways to facilitate behavior change.
Youth Services (Habilitation)
- Provide face-to-face, skills-based interventions aligned with the youth’s Individualized Plan of Care.
- Support development of: Emotional regulation and anger management; Identification and expression of feelings; Problem-solving and decision-making skills; Communication and social skills; Coping strategies and resilience; Pro-social peer interactions and resistance to negative influences
- Deliver services in the home, school, and community settings
Skills Training & Development
- Deliver structured interventions that: Remove psychosocial barriers; Build independent living and daily functioning skills; Support progress toward treatment goals identified in the Plan of Care
- Monitor and document skill acquisition and progress over time
Respite Support
- Provide short-term supervision and support to ensure youth safety and well-being as well as caregiver relief and sustainability
- Maintain a structured, supportive environment consistent with treatment goals
Family Training & Support (FST)
- Provide education and coaching to caregivers to: Strengthen parenting and behavior management skills; Improve understanding of the youth’s behavioral health needs; Build confidence, stability, and family functioning
- Support crisis prevention and de-escalation
- Help families access and utilize community resources and natural supports
Clinical & Documentation Expectations
- Ensure all services are: medically necessary, aligned with treatment goals and delivered in accordance with DMHA and Medicaid standards.
- Complete accurate, timely documentation demonstrating the interventions provided, progress toward goals and ongoing clinical need.
- Participate in monthly wraparound team meetings and collaborate with: Wraparound facilitators, Therapists, Case managers and Other service providers
- Immediately notify supervisor of any critical or potentially critical issues or crisis.
- Ensure that all communication is professional and consistently reflects dignity and respect.
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and Cornerstone guidelines.
Qualifications (Required):
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with youth with Serious Emotional Disturbance (SED)
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Reliable transportation and ability to travel locally
- Must have the ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
- Must maintain CPR and First Aid certification and must stay current on all other training as required by Cornerstone.
- Successful background check upon hire (prior to providing care to youth) and on-going as required by Cornerstone.
- Successful drug screen prior to hire and annually thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or related field
- Experience in wraparound services, Trauma-informed care and/or Behavioral health or child welfare systems
- Experience with crisis de-escalation and behavior management
