ROLE IMPACT
The Library Public Service Specialist I delivers frontline reference and customer service support to ensure patrons receive accurate information, technology assistance, and meaningful engagement with library resources. Success in this role means providing responsive public service, supporting programming and outreach efforts, and maintaining a welcoming, organized branch environment that serves a diverse community of all ages.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide reference and referral assistance by interpreting patron requests and utilizing the online catalog, research databases, downloadable digital content, and internet resources
• Assist patrons with computers, job searching, printing, copying, library cards, and general library procedures
• Support collection development and maintain assigned subject areas under direct supervision
• Assist with planning, creating, and presenting programming, outreach events, promotional displays, and reading lists
• Open and close the facility as assigned; maintain a neat and orderly environment; provide limited shelving, check-in, and curbside support as needed
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in English, Library Science, History, or related field; OR Associate degree/60 college credit hours with additional qualifying experience
• Two (2) years of frontline customer service or library services experience
• Demonstrated interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively
Core Tools & Systems
• Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Integrated Library System (ILS) and online catalog platforms
• Research databases and downloadable digital content systems (eBooks, audiobooks)
• Internet research tools and web-based applications
• Public access computer systems and basic troubleshooting tools
Preferred Skills
• Spanish or additional language proficiency
• Experience providing one-on-one computer or job search assistance
• Strong critical thinking, conflict resolution, and customer service skills
