What are the responsibilities and job description for the Special Education Aide/BASS position at Conroe Independent School District?
Help meet the physical and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities inside and outside classroom. Assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP), including self-help, behavior management, and instructional programs. Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.
- Help manage the behavior of assigned students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and following individual student behavior intervention plans as needed.
- Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
- Work with assigned students or small groups to reinforce behavioral skills assigned by teacher.
- Assist assigned students throughout school day, inside and outside classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
- Collect necessary paperwork/data per teacher direction.
- Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of assigned students.
- Participate in professional development programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
- Assist in other Special Education or General Education classroom settings.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Maintain regular attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Experience working with children
Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid Texas educational aide certificate (must obtain within 30 days of employment)
- Current certification in de-escalation and restraint techniques or completion of certification within 45 school days of employment
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Ability to work with children with disabilities
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively
EQUIPMENT USED: Wheelchair lift, ramps, personal computer, copier, typewriter, and audiovisual equipment.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
- Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals
- Posture: Frequent standing, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and kneeling
- Motion: Frequent walking
- Lifting: Regular heavy lifting of students
- Environment: Biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases
- Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress
