About SedMed
At Sed-Med, we are dedicated to promoting the safety and independence of individuals with mobility impairments. Through innovative product solutions, we aim to enhance the quality of life for our customers and users. Our primary product is the SedMed Toilet Lift Assist, a gas-spring powered lift that mounts onto standard US toilets and assists individuals with getting on and off the toilet. It features a slow lowering mechanism to ease users down and provides a natural yet effective boost, allowing users to lift up to 80% of their body weight. As a mechanical engineering intern at SedMed, you will have the opportunity to contribute directly to this mission while honing your skills and gaining valuable experience.
Mechanical Engineering Internship
The Mechanical Engineering internship will support the design, testing, installation, and servicing of assistive medical devices that improve mobility and independence for older adults. This internship offers hands-on exposure across the full product lifecycle, from customer discovery and engineering design to manufacturing, patents, and real-world deployment, through a mix of onsite work and field visits to eldercare and rehabilitation facilities.
General Responsibilities:
- Participate in building, testing, and servicing SedMed products in the office.
- Assisting with the design process for product improvements and accessories
- Visiting eldercare facilities and rehab hospitals to install SedMed Toilet Lifts and learn about our customers
Project Scope: Throughout the internship, you will engage in the entire product lifecycle, including:
- Meeting with SedMed advisers, customers, and end-users to gather insights on customer needs for future products and feedback on existing products.
- Collaborating with engineers and advisers to assist in the design process.
- Learning about the patent writing process and participating in meetings with patent lawyers.
- Participating in discussions with manufacturers to understand the manufacturing process.
- Building, installing, and servicing products in the field.
About You
- Currently enrolled in a college-level or graduate-level mechanical engineering program.
- Passionate about making a positive impact on the lives of individuals with mobility impairments.
- Basic knowledge of mechanical design principles and fabrication techniques.
- Ability to come onsite to Milford, CT office at least 4 days a week
- Experience in smart devices is also preferred
