What are the responsibilities and job description for the Early Childhood Co-Teacher position at Congregation Beth Sholom?
The Co-Teacher works collaboratively with the Lead Teacher to support a safe, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment. This role helps implement developmentally appropriate curriculum, supports children's social, emotional, and academic growth, and builds strong, respectful partnerships with families and colleagues. Co-Teachers play an essential role in daily classroom operations and in advancing the JEC's mission and values.
Essential ResponsibilitiesClassroom Environment & Child Safety
Support the Lead Teacher in implementing weekly lesson plans that integrate curriculum and encourage child-led exploration
Maintain appropriate supervision and ensure child-to-staff ratios are met at all times
Ensure compliance with all municipal and state child care licensing regulations
Conduct daily health and safety checks and greet each child by name
Maintain accurate records of children's medical needs, allergies, and care plans
Participate in emergency preparedness activities (e.g., fire and earthquake drills)
Promote healthy habits through role modeling and daily routines, including nutrition, hygiene, and dental health
Child Development & Learning
Foster a positive, inclusive classroom culture that supports each child's identity, strengths, and sense of belonging
Respond to children's needs with warmth, patience, and developmentally appropriate guidance
Encourage respect for diversity and differences in age-appropriate ways
Support children in developing independence and self-help skills
Use play, conversation, and teachable moments to promote curiosity, problem-solving, and learning
Support language, literacy, math, and science development through daily routines and intentional activities
Extend learning into outdoor environments with purposeful small- and large-group activities
Curriculum & Family Partnership
Implement early learning practices aligned with Alaska's Early Learning Guidelines
Collaborate with families to understand individual goals for each child
Observe, document, and share children's progress with families in a timely and respectful manner
Support referrals for children with suspected developmental delays or disabilities in collaboration with administration
Classroom Operations & Team Collaboration
Support smooth transitions throughout the day by helping children follow routines and expectations
Assist the Lead Teacher with supervising aides, floaters, and volunteers
Help orient volunteers to classroom routines and activities and ensure volunteer hours are documented
Participate in staff training, evaluations, and professional development as requested
Communicate concerns through the established chain of command and escalate issues appropriately
Center Support & Daily Operations
Prepare meals and snacks as needed following CACFP and center guidelines
Assist with cleaning and sanitizing classrooms, shared spaces, toys, dishes, and laundry
Complete classroom and center opening/closing checklists as assigned
Support coverage for staff breaks when directed
Professional Practices
Report to work reliably and on time according to schedule
Maintain confidentiality of children, families, and staff information
Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and openness to feedback
Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and required professional development
Manage time effectively and seek guidance when needed
Documentation & Communication
Record daily attendance, meal counts, observations, and timesheets accurately and on time
Maintain clear, respectful, and consistent communication with families and colleagues
Review center communications and electronic platforms daily
Share daily updates and observations with families as required

Reports to: Administration
Minimum Qualifications
At least 18 years of age
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
Willingness to obtain a Child Development Associate (CDA), CDL, or SEED Level 6 within 18 months of hire
Three character references
Preferred Qualifications
Associate or bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field
Prior experience in early childhood education
Additional Requirements / Certifications (Required or Upon Hire)
Current First Aid and CPR certification
Alaska Approved Health & Safety and Mandatory Reporter Training
Approved background check with Municipal Licensing (including fingerprinting and Interested Person's Report)
Proof of U.S. employment eligibility (I-9)
