What are the responsibilities and job description for the Production Planner position at Confidential?
Position Overview
We are seeking a proactive, deadline-driven Production Planner to develop and manage production schedules in a low-volume, high-mix CNC machine-shop environment. This role coordinates customer requirements, available capacity, raw materials, work orders, and outside processing to keep jobs moving and support on-time delivery.
The successful candidate takes ownership of planning activities, anticipates constraints, and follows through without constant direction. This individual must work autonomously while maintaining strong communication and collaboration with Production, Purchasing, Engineering, Quality, Shipping and Receiving, and customer-facing teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain realistic production schedules based on customer due dates, machine and labor capacity, setup and run times, material availability, tooling, and outside-processing requirements.
- Review open sales orders, work orders, routings, and work-in-process (WIP) to establish job priorities and achievable completion dates.
- Create and release manufacturing work orders through the ERP system; confirm materials, drawings, routings, and required resources are ready before release.
- Sequence jobs across work centers and shifts, accounting for shared resources, inspection, assembly, and downstream operations.
- Coordinate with Purchasing and Receiving to confirm raw-material specifications, stock forms, quantities, availability, and expected receipt dates.
- Anticipate material shortages, capacity conflicts, and outside-processing delays; initiate follow-up and escalate risks with recommended recovery actions.
- Monitor job progress and quantities at each process step, identify stalled work, and coordinate action to maintain material flow and delivery commitments.
- Adjust schedules promptly for changing priorities, equipment downtime, quality holds, rework, and supplier delays; communicate the impact to affected teams.
- Provide clear updates on production progress, shortages, backlog, and delivery risks, including the action owner and expected resolution date.
- Maintain accurate ERP scheduling, work-order, routing, inventory-status, and completion data; resolve discrepancies with responsible departments.
- Participate in production meetings, communicate priorities across shifts, and follow action items through completion.
- Build and improve practical ERP-based planning and reporting processes that strengthen schedule reliability, visibility, and on-time delivery.
Required Qualifications
- Five or more years of production planning, scheduling, or related manufacturing experience.
- Direct experience in a low-volume, high-mix CNC machine shop or comparable job-shop manufacturing environment.
- Working knowledge of CNC manufacturing workflows, routings, work centers, setup and run times, capacity planning, and production constraints.
- Understanding of raw-material specifications, alloys, stock forms, quantities, and lead times relevant to machining operations.
- Hands-on experience using an ERP/MRP system to create, release, schedule, and track manufacturing work orders.
- Strong Microsoft Excel, data-analysis, documentation, and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing deadlines, maintain accurate schedules, and follow through on commitments.
- Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and escalate issues early while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain priorities, constraints, and delivery risks clearly.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with JobBOSS, JobBOSS² or a comparable manufacturing ERP system
- Planning and Inventory Management (CPIM) certification is strongly preferred, but not required.
- Experience coordinating production across multiple shifts and a variety of work centers.
- Experience supporting aerospace, defense, or other regulated manufacturing, including familiarity with AS9100 or ISO 9001 quality systems.
- Experience establishing or improving planning processes, ERP data accuracy, and production-status reporting.
