The Litigation Counsel provides legal guidance to company leadership and business teams on employment-related laws, regulations, and compliance matters. This role manages litigation in state and federal courts, oversees responses to agency charges, and ensures the organization’s practices align with applicable legal standards. Additionally, the attorney may offer broader counsel and support to management on general legal issues as part of the company’s legal team.
As Litigation Counsel, you will play a key role in ensuring the organization operates within legal and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead quality assurance initiatives by overseeing compliance reviews and partnering with internal stakeholders to ensure all operational practices align with applicable laws, regulations, and company policies. Provide guidance and recommendations to mitigate legal risks and promote a culture of compliance across the organization.
- Conduct initial reviews of Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and state agency charges, assessing the nature of each claim and coordinating with the Assistant General Counsel (AGC) to develop effective response and defense strategies. Manage communication and documentation related to these matters to ensure timely and accurate submissions.
- Oversee the intake and assessment of filed litigation, working closely with the AGC and General Counsel to evaluate exposure, develop defense strategies, and coordinate with external counsel as needed. Monitor case progress and ensure alignment with organizational priorities and legal standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned, providing legal insight and support on a variety of projects and initiatives to advance the goals of the legal department and the company.
Qualifications:
- Proven commercial or employment law experience with strong attention to detail, ability to focus on key issues, and a commitment to ethical business practices.
- Able to quickly identify and assess legal and business risks and develop practical strategies to mitigate them while supporting operational goals.
- Skilled at managing a high volume of matters across multiple locations or business units, providing timely and practical legal guidance.
- Works effectively with colleagues and business leaders, communicates clearly and respectfully, and is open to diverse perspectives.
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited U.S. law school; membership in a state bar preferred (California Bar membership a plus).
- Two to five years of litigation experience in a law firm or corporate setting, with strong knowledge of state and federal litigation procedures; experience with wage and hour or employment-related litigation is preferred.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States.
