About the Company
A Landscape/Hardscape company in the Greater Portland area is seeking a results-driven Operations Manager to lead and oversee the company. This individual will be responsible for the "big picture" of daily operations—from project scheduling and crew management to quality control and client communication.
The ideal candidate has a deep background in skilled trade and/or service-based businesses involving remote crews and tight deadlines. Most importantly, the Operations Manager possesses the leadership skills to build a high-performing team and scale existing operations.
Responsibilities
- Operational Leadership: Manage daily schedules for multiple crews, ensuring equipment and materials are staged and ready for project sites.
- Project Oversight: Supervise landscaping and hardscaping projects from inception to completion, ensuring work meets company quality standards and local codes.
- Team Management: Recruit, train, and mentor crew members and foremen; foster a culture of safety, efficiency, and professional pride.
- Financial Performance: Manage project budgets, labor hours, and material costs to ensure profitability; provide input for estimating and bidding.
- Client Relations: Act as the primary point of contact for clients during the construction phase, providing updates and resolving issues promptly.
- Safety & Compliance: Enforce strict safety protocols on-site and ensure all vehicles and equipment are maintained in top working order.
- Strategic Growth: Assist ownership in identifying opportunities for service expansion and process improvement.
Requirements
- Industry Experience: Proven experience in a leadership or management role within the landscaping and hardscaping industry.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of hardscape construction (retaining walls, patios, drainage) and horticultural practices.
- Management Skills: Ability to lead diverse teams, manage complex schedules, and handle high-pressure situations in the field.
- Business Acumen: Familiarity with project costing, labor management, and basic P&L responsibilities.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with both crews and high-end clients.
- Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Strong Plus
- Local Market Knowledge: 5 years of experience in the Maine/Casco Bay landscaping market.
- Certifications: ICPI (Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute) or NCMA (National Concrete Masonry Association) certifications.
- Education: Degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Construction Management, or a related field.
- Equipment Proficiency: Experience operating heavy machinery (skid steers, excavators) and training others on their use.
- Sales Experience: Ability to assist in the design-build sales process and upselling services.
Salary : $80,000 - $100,000
