Construction Purchasing Agent

Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Construction Purchasing Agent to join our growing team. This position is responsible for sourcing construction materials, obtaining competitive quotes, negotiating pricing, issuing purchase orders, tracking deliveries, and coordinating with project managers, superintendents, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure projects remain on schedule and within budget.
The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and thrives in a fast-paced construction environment while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
Responsibilities
- Purchase construction materials, equipment, supplies, and services for active commercial projects.
- Obtain and compare vendor quotes based on pricing, availability, quality, and delivery schedules.
- Prepare, issue, and track purchase orders from start to completion.
- Coordinate material deliveries with project managers, field supervisors, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors while negotiating competitive pricing and favorable terms.
- Monitor inventory levels and replenish commonly used materials as needed.
- Review purchase orders, delivery tickets, and invoices for accuracy.
- Assist with cost control initiatives by identifying savings opportunities and alternative sourcing options.
- Resolve issues involving delayed, damaged, or incorrect material deliveries.
- Maintain accurate purchasing records within the company's project management software.
- Support the estimating and project management teams by obtaining current pricing, lead times, and product availability.
Qualifications
- Previous purchasing experience in construction, commercial maintenance, contracting, or a related industry required.
- Strong knowledge of construction materials, equipment, vendor networks, and purchasing processes.
- Ability to interpret purchase requests, scopes of work, and basic construction documents.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and follow-up skills.
- Exceptional organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize multiple purchase requests while meeting deadlines.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word), email, and purchasing or project management software.
- Ability to work collaboratively with office staff, project managers, field personnel, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Valid driver's license preferred.
Preferred Experience
- Commercial construction purchasing.
- Vendor and supplier relationship management.
- Experience with commercial construction, concrete, maintenance, remodeling, or general contracting projects.
- Experience using Buildertrend, Buildern, Procore, or similar construction management software.
- Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks or Sage is a plus.

Work Environment
