The Chief Estimator is responsible for all estimating and bidding activities for sitework and excavation projects within the division. This role focuses on preparing accurate, competitive bids and managing projects from preconstruction through execution in coordination with the Superintendent. The Chief Estimator works closely with company leadership to ensure alignment with company goals, project efficiency, and profitability targets.
Key Responsibilities:
Prepare bids and budgets for earthwork, grading, utilities, demolition, and related site development projects.
Review bid specifications, drawings, and contract documents to determine project scope, risks, and requirements.
Perform detailed quantity take-offs and develop cost estimates, including labor, equipment, materials, trucking, and subcontractor costs.
Manage the full bid process, including invitations to bid, pre-bid meetings, addenda review, and proposal submissions.
Analyze historical cost data and market trends to ensure accurate and competitive pricing.
Coordinate closely with the Superintendent to plan project execution, production methods, and scheduling.
Oversee awarded projects from preconstruction through completion in partnership with the Superintendent.
Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors, subcontractors, and clients.
Assist in contract negotiations and participate in project handoff and ongoing project coordination.
Ensure all estimates and projects comply with company policies, safety standards, and industry regulations.
Qualifications:
5–10 years of estimating experience in sitework and excavation required.
Strong understanding of excavation methods, earthwork production, and site utility installation.
Proficiency with estimating software and digital takeoff tools.
Excellent analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
Strong communication and organizational abilities.
Proven ability to manage multiple bids and projects in a fast-paced environment.
High attention to detail and accuracy.
Preferred Skills:
Experience with GPS modeling, 3D takeoffs, and digital plan review tools.
Familiarity with DOT, municipal, and private development project requirements.
Working knowledge of construction scheduling and cost control principles.
Ability to collaborate effectively with field operations and project management teams.
